The thirst for knowledge and the need to create have been the cornerstones of man’’s progress over the last millennium. Without the desire to see what lies over the horizon and without questioning what we have been told by and learnt from previous generations we”d all still be living in caves.
Man’’s ability to be innovative and attempt things that to previous generations would have seemed incredible, impossible or unbelievable has been the catalyst in creating the modern world. One of the most fascinating areas this has manifested itself is in bridge design and construction.
Travel, commerce, expansion, migration all have been influenced greatly by bridge design and construction. It has led to swathes of people being able to travel from one area to another and create new communities and sometimes whole countries. The ability to move across rivers, ravines and difficult terrain without any great problem has opened up trade routes and created dialogue amongst different communities and continents that would not previously have been possible.
Bridge design and construction can be broken down into three main types; simple, continuous and cantilever. These three basic design principles then cover all the different types of bridge design and construction including bean and girder, arch and truss.
Beam and girder bridges are usually made of metal or reinforced concrete. Beam and girder bridge design and construction has benefitted from the introduction of computer technology with many designs now owing a great deal to computer stress analysis. The design and construction of such buildings is now far more economical and predictable as a consequence.
The term ”arch bridges” includes constructions we know as suspension bridges. The bridge design and construction includes abutments at each end; the curve. All weight from both the bridge and its load is transferred into a horizontal thrust which is held by the abutments.
Truss bridges consist of connected pieces that carry load through tension or compression. They are one of the oldest types of modern bridge design and in terms of engineering are relatively straightforward to understand. Due to its efficient use of materials it was a popular form of bridge design and construction in the 18th and 19th centuries. Early American settlers constructed many truss bridges as they moved west across the continent because the wood was so abundant. It was easy to make the pieces needed for a truss bridge from wood and fit them together.
Erskine Bridge, Scotland - Beam and girder bridges are very common. They are usually the type used in road and rail construction because of their straightforward design, strength and longevity. The Erskine Bridge in Scotland is the A898 road that connects the M8 and A82. It enables 26,000 vehicles to cross the River Clyde every day.
The Pont du Gard, France - This aqueduct constructed by the Roman Empire is an example of arch bridge design and construction. The ability to make these types of construction stretched back to 1300 BC and so there are may examples to be found throughout the world. It is believed the Pont du Gard was constructed in the first century A.D. The fascinating thing about this bridge is that the stone was cut to such precise dimensions that there was no need for mortar as a fixing agent; completely unique to arch bridges. The Pont du Gard is listed as a World Heritage Site.
Sky Gate Bridge R, Japan - The truss bridge design and construction may be old and simple but that does not mean it is no longer used. Kansai International Airport lies on an artificial island in Osaka Bay. The island is connected to the mainland by the longest double-decked truss bridge in the world which carries both automobile and rail traffic.

What does LCD TV mean and how does it function? LCD stands for liquid crystal display. Behind the screen are a number of pixels followed by a fluorescent light. When this light falls on the pixels, an electric current is generated, creating light variations, which make up the vividly colored images that we see. Generally, the twisted nematic liquid crystal is used which has a naturally twisted crystalline structure.
The screen size of an LCD TV varies between 13-46 inches and it is about 2 inches deep in thickness. They are very light and so extremely easy to install. This indicates that they require very little space and come with a very sleek look. In fact, they can very well be compared to the fragile beauty of a woman!
Next is the consideration of the `burn-in` factor. LCD TVs are not susceptible to `ghosting` which results due to premature dying out of the pixels. The uniquely twisted crystals do not allow `burn-in` or `ghosting` to happen.
There has been a marked improvement in the refresh rate or response time of LCD TVs. Previously, the images tended to lag behind and stay on screen for a period of time that was much more than necessary. Recent technological advances have put all that behind. Usually, the response time varies with the size and quality of the LCD TVs.
The contrast ratio in the more advanced LCD TVs is 1000:1. The contrast ratio is measured by the ratio between the brightest white to the darkest black. The scenario has improved here too. Research is on to push the ratio well past the 1000:1 mark.
Sixty-thousands hours is the average life span of an LCD TV. So at an average viewing of 8 hours a day, an LCD TV should last for about 20 years. The life span of an LCD TV is dependent on the back-light. Since it uses a liquid crystal, there is nothing else which can wear out other than the back-light. Technology has found a way around this problem by creating replaceable back-lights as well.
Power consumption, which is perhaps a very important aspect, has a definite advantage in case of LCD TVs. LCD TVs utilize fluorescent back-lighting and so power consumption is low and steady.
LCD TVs are unaffected by changes in air pressure. This makes it a favorite among air travelers. The performance is consistent and the picture flawless, regardless of the altitude of the airplane.
There is much talk about mercury being used for the fluorescent lighting. But, the manufacturers will vouch-safe for the fact that a nominal amount of mercury is used. This mercury does not come in contact with the viewer and so is entirely harmless.
Some manufacturers are trying to incorporate picture-in-picture feature in their monitors. This feature enables a viewer to see one program on the full TV screen while a few other programs can run in small windows in it. The viewer gets the added advantage to watch a particular program, while waiting for the intermittent advertisements to end in another window.
Experiments are on to extend color reproductions in LCD TVs. The idea is to use two back-lights with slightly differing intensities of colors in consecutive frames. This will enable the viewer to experience a better and a more vivid picture using a more precise color variation.
An LCD TV is a whole new experience, the flavor of which can be savored only by purchasing one. The advantages are manifold and the experience is just exotic. Indulging in one is a worthy bargain.

As someone who has frequently used noise canceling headphones onflight, I truly attest to the claim that they can indeed make your flying experience a lot more welcoming. At least for now, I don”t have to live with the incessant hissing from the drone of the aircraft engine, the humming of the fans or other irritating noises coming from the surroundings while I laze in my economy seat.
It seemed incredible but this is actually made possible by simple audio technology. Microphones in the noise canceling headphones send out sound waves to combat noise whenever they detect its presence. In fact, on most airlines, they actually distribute noise canceling headphones to their guests on business and first class!
Well, instead of paying two or three months of your salary to purchase a business or first class ticket, here’’s another cheaper option. Get a pair of noise canceling headphones yourself! But with so many brands and even models available, which should you go for?
Frankly, it depends. I”ll recommend that you go through these 4 considerations and do some research before you narrow down to the exact set that fits your criteria. Have fun picking the cherries!
(1) Budget
Naturally, all of us will like to get the best quality headphones. That is, if price is not an issue. But the truth is, money does matters. After all, the cost of a set of high end noise canceling headphones such as Bose Quiet Comfort series can cut you back by a hefty $300 or more. Hence, before deciding other form factors or criteria which I”ll be discussing later, it’’s imperative that you decide the amount you”re willing to spend. That will in turn help you narrow down to the brands and models to review.
For example, if your budget is about $150, you may want to consider only brands like Sennheiser which has an excellent series of noise canceling at that price. Brands like Bose would be of a less likely consideration since they would probably cost you much more than that.
(2) Noise Canceling & Sound Quality
What good is a pair of noise canceling headphones if it doesn”t perform well in that department? You might as well get use a conventional set of headphones! Your personal preference for the extent of the noise cancellation onflight and the quality of the sound experience can easily influence your decision on the headphones to select.
For example, if you”re someone particular about the enjoying your music onflight, getting a higher end set can be just a thin line separating heaven and earth!
(3) Comfort
Noise canceling headphones are usually wore for a stretched period of time, depending on the duration of your flight. They can be a strain if the headphone cups are too tight over the ears. On the other hand, if they”re too loose, you probably have to prop them up everytime you lower your head! Put it simply, we want something that gives the right fit.
A rule of thumb is to ensure that the cups of the headphones go over your ears instead of on them and give a nice fit without losing too much coverage on the sound. At the end of the day, I”ll rather pay more for a pair noise cancelling headphones which scores well in the comfort department than something that’’s less expensive but totally unbearable.
(4) Size
Is the headphone easily portable and foldable into a storage box for easy retrieval? Can the storage box be small enough to fit into your handcarry bag? At first glance, these seemed to be minor considerations. But for road warriors, this can matter a lot since every inch of space counts in their luggage. Trust me, I”m speaking from personal experience!

I never thought I”d spend more than $400 for a ladder? Ha! But then again, I never thought I”d want anything more than the hand me down wooden step ladder my grandpa gave me. Now, I see what ladders are turning into, and I think I just might want one of those newfangled, fancy, extending, bending, multi-use, worthy- of-an-hour-long-informercial ladders!
First of all, I”ll admit, I”m impressed with a simple, run of the mill extension ladder. With a flick of the wrist, or the pull of a cord, you can take an innocent looking 12 foot ladder to 16 feet, or more! Call me naive, but I”m impressed.
Now, you show me a step ladder made for a stair well and I”m agog! I love those! I remember the first time my parents painted their stairwell with a more traditional ladder–it involved a veritable scaffolding of 2×4s bracing and balancing the ladder so my dad could reach the ceiling 12 to 16 feet above him. My mother warned, fretted, and paced the whole time he was up there. Even I, at 13 years old knew my dad was in a precarious position; if I had it to do over, I”d get him one of those stairway ladders.
How about those ladders that look simple enough at first–just a typical A-frame from 4-6 feet tall? But then you notice both sides extend, so it can become a stair way ladder (with sides extended unevenly). Or just a really tall A-frame (with sides extended evenly), or even taller as an extension ladder (unfold the A-frame and extend both ends. I”ve even seen ladders that are A-frame extension ladders that can be pulled apart, so you have two ladders! It blows my mind.
The newest type of ladder I”ve discovered is called a telescoping ladder. Sometimes people refer to extension ladders as telescoping ladders, and rightly so, but these are different! These telescoping ladders telescope rung by rung so you can not only choose your desired height, but also telescope this baby down to less than 3 feet tall!
It’’s a ladder revolution for anyone who wants to transport a ladder but doesn”t have a truck, or who needs to store a ladder, but doesn”t have a big garage. Now your ladder can fit in the trunk of your car or at the bottom of your closet!
Now, you don”t have to spend over $400 on a ladder. You might just need a 6-foot aluminum stepladder and that will be just fine. But with the ladder options that are out there today, take the time to ask around, do some shopping, and really think about how you will need to use a ladder now and in the future.
$400 or more may seem like a lot to spend on a ladder today, but if it saves you from having to buy another one a few years down the road, or if it saves you from the 2×4 scaffolding-over-the-stairs scenario, it just might be worth it. With the quality of today’’s best ladders, you could be looking at a true investment, even an heirloom for future generations!

Wireless outdoor speakers are becoming more and more common nowadays. Gone are the old, outdated and wired speaker systems that you need to run audio and electrical wires to in order to get them to emit sound. Landscape designers are busy snatching up wireless outdoor speakers in an effort to improve their landscapes.
But when looking to buy outdoor wireless speakers, what should one look for? More specifically, what aspects are more desirable in these speakers? When buying outdoor wireless speakers, only four things need to be considered. Those four are Compatibility, Durability, Rechargeability and Transmission Limitations.
It is a basic fact that an outdoor wireless speaker must be compatible with the audio player which is the source of the music. While this is most important, compatibility is not as much of a concern due to the fact that most wireless outdoor speakers are compatible with most major audio players. There may be new manufacturers that come into the market that have a limited compatibility so be sure you check when you are considering your purchase.
Durability is also a concern for outdoor wireless speakers. We all want to get the most out of our equipment when we purchase it and we want it to last a long time. The same holds true for wireless outdoor speakers if for no other reason than they will be outside in the elements. While these speakers are meant to withstand all sorts of differing weather conditions (hot, cold, humid, dry), they are not water proof and cannot hold up to prolonged direct exposure to rain.
Wireless outdoor speakers also need to be recharged becasue they lack a power cord which supplies power to the speaker. So a self-contained power-source in the form of rechargeable batteries is contained within the speaker. Most speakers have solar panels which collect the energy from the sun and transfer it to the batteries inside the unit.
The final criteria by which wireless outdoor speakers must be judged is the transmission limitation of the unit. This criterion is the one that usually is focused on by purchasers. Since your wireless outdoor speakers are going to be used outdoors, this is a pretty important one.
The transmission limitation of the speaker refers to the distance between the audio source and the speaker itself. The speaker is meant to be used remotely so ensuring the transmission limitations of the speaker is an important step. If the area limits are defined, simply measuring the area can yield the dimensions of the airspace that need to be covered.
The strongest speakers can extend to the playing area of a football field. So even with a backyard of 100 feet, the weakest speaker can be fine to use by most purchasers.
Before you go to buy wireless outdoor speakers, consider these four criteria and you won”t go wrong.

If you”ve heard all the hype recently about hydrogen fuel cells, you may want to know how to run your car on water. If you do a little digging you may be overwhelmed by all the information out there that is probably pointing you towards technology that isn”t even available to you yet. Fortunately, there is some hydrogen technology out there that you can start using today.
The first mistake many make when they think of running a car on water is to think of hydrogen cell technology. Hydrogen cell technology is different from hydrogen conversion kits in that, in the case of hydrogen fuel cells, they actually replace the internal combustion engine entirely, whereas hydrogen conversion kits attach to the internal combustion and convert it into a water hybrid.
Where To Begin?
Here’’s how to run your car on water: first, look around online for hydrogen car kits or hydrogen car conversion. You can find a lot of sites with instructions on how to convert your car, beware however of scam sites which do not provide support. The guide you download will tell you what parts you need and how to assemble them into the device you need to attach to your car. The parts you need can usually be found at just about any hardware store and will cost you about $20. These parts include an automotive fuse, some baking soda, electrical wiring, a vacuum hose, and a quart-sized glass jar.
Assembling Instructions
All you have to do is follow the directions, build the device and fill it with water. Next, you have to attach one end of the device to your car’’s intake manifold and attach the other end to the battery. The device uses energy from your battery to transform the water within it to a compound called Brown’’s Gas. Brown’’s Gas is also known as HHO, Hydroxy, or Water-Fuel. It is a clean-burning fuel that provides a tremendous amount of energy. Its only byproduct is water and some who have made the conversion have reported that their gas mileage has doubled.
Can A Mechanic Do It For You?
Though it is relatively easy to learn how to run your car on water and build and install the kit, some may feel understandably overwhelmed by the mechanics involved. Don”t worry; there are mechanics out there that can help you. Though they are hard to find, there are some mechanics that are familiar with the process and will build and install the conversion kit for about $300.
Conclusion
These days, just about all of us are worried about how we are going to fuel our future. It seems like just about every other oil-producing country is run by a despotic dictator and the emissions produced by burning oil are strangling our environment. The best thing you can do to do your part is to learn how to run your car on water, make the conversion, save some money, and save our environment and habitat.

The increasing pace of development in the field of technology has made almost everything compact and compatible for the users. Particularly the electronic devices are improving faster than the requirements of the people.
Every one wants comfort and satisfaction and a good return on their investment in the bargain. The product manufacturers are also competing to give their best so as to make their product acceptable and hence, every time some new product hit the market with some improved technology.
LCD TVs are the revolution in the direction of television technology. The sophisticated technology involved in LCD TV help liquid crystal displays. The advantage of the LCD TV lies in its low power consumption and making it into almost any shape. This is the first choice for people who prefer watching movies in large screens.
The LCD TV with its light weight can be placed anywhere with a stand. The crystal clear images of the device are excellent to give you new dimension to your viewing experience. The impressive features of high resolution make gaming more interesting. The flat panel televisions with bright and attractive pictures and remarkable sound quality are compatible with the HDTV programming.
These days, the price of the LCD TV has dropped. They are gaining popularity for their larger size, better picture, soothing sound, style and light weight. Today, there are larger numbers of brands available to choose from such as Sony, Samsung, Sharp and Panasonic. However, exceptional image resolution is common to LCD TV of all brands. But while purchasing the LCD TV, there are certain factors that need to be considered carefully to get the best out of your expense.
First of all you need to check the size of the room where you are going to place your new LCD TV. Watching television is a great fun and perfect way to relax in this age. But the rules of watching television include maintaining certain distance from the monitor depending upon its size. Here the size of the monitor matters a lot.
If you are purchasing LCD TV with a larger monitor you need to keep greater distance and for that you need a room with larger space. So your selection of the size of the monitor should be according to the size of the room.
Each frame of images should be refreshed onto the screen. If the refresh time is slow the LCD TV will display poor image quality though it depends on what you are watching. Sometimes it may happen that you can find good pictures during watching movies but not while playing video games. If you are getting fastest response time with a decent price you can go for it.
There are many models of LCD TV in the market that allow connection to computer but lack a DVI connection. If you are connecting your LCD TV to the computer you need to check if the DVI connection is available with it.
Sony KDL-40XBR2 are the most popular LCD TV among all brands. Apart from that Sharp LC-32D44 and Samsung LN-S3251D are also better performing LCD TVs. Do not go for the cheap brands. The better brand names will provide you with high quality hardware. The best way is to browse through the websites where you will find several models with varied features at your display. Check best quality LCD TVs and compare their prices before taking any decision.
An LCD TV is not something that you replace frequently. You must be thinking of a long-term use while purchasing this for your home. Hence, you need to choose the right one. Television is the most popular gadget of fun and enjoyment. The new-age gadgets like LCD TVs are developed with advanced technology for high-end performance. Playing videogames and watching TV are more interesting than it was ever.

As the world continues to get more dangerous, the last thing you want is to bring that danger directly into your home. Newspaper stories tell the tale babysitters abusing children when their parents are off at work.
There have been workers who have been hired in good faith to repair or maintain your property, stealing both from inside and outside the house. Very unfortunate, but the reality is that unless you are vigilant and careful, your family, home and possessions could be hurt by people.
In this article you will learn how security cameras are indeed your help in preventing the inevitable.
The answer is to be diligent and use caution when hiring anyone. Check references, though many previous people don”t or won”t give you all the information due to a fear of being sued by the person. Still, if you ask for references and check them, you have a much greater chance of getting good people.
Let’’s be clear that the majority of people are very responsible and trustworthy and all they want is the opportunity to work. That said, there is the very small minority that are the problem and make it more difficult for both the worker and the owner.
Using surveillance cameras is one way to keep better control on your home or business. These little devices are great for placing discretely around your home and office. The reason for using cameras however is twofold.
First, there is the keeping honest people honest idea. This is nothing more than building on the fact that people act differently when they think they”re being watched. Put security cameras in the office and let people know about them and they tend to behave differently.
There’’s less of an argument when a customer makes claims against your employee and you need to sort through the information to get to the truth. So this first potential use for surveillance or security cameras is to allow you the potential to see what actually happened.
In at home setting, it’’s possible to view how the kids are behaving when the adults are gone. Who comes into and leaves your home when can also be captured. This doesn”t mean that you don”t trust your family or employees, only that by having security cameras around, people will be better behaved.
The Second reason why it’’s important to consider a security camera system is to catch bad behavior or illegal activities. By having your home secured with this technology, you are able to easily identify people that shouldn”t be around your home, like would be burglars.
There also is the latest in surveillance camera technology, the nanny cam. This is nothing more than a hidden camera within your home to monitor the behavior of people you leave in charge of your children. Some entertain guests while you”re away and drink heavily while watching television instead of watching the kids. Although most babysitter- nanny types are great, you need to recognize that if the person you leave in charge isn”t responsible, your children could be at risk of being hurt or worse.
Surveillance camera systems have come a long way in the just the last few years. The cameras themselves are getting much smaller and easier to set up. No longer is it necessary to have a specialized security company set up and place a surveillance system in your home or business.
Surveillance cameras now come with a wide variety of options. From capturing color images, motion activated, auto pan and close up functionality from your computer, and even wireless cameras are all available at very attractive pricing.
Everyone should consider the importance of having a security surveillance camera for peace of mind of the family and themselves. Prevention is the greatest thing you can do for your loved ones.
