The Cell Phone Versus Home Phone Debate

October 31, 2008

By Art Gib

Ten or fifteen years ago, a cell phone looked like a thick walkie-talkie with an antenna as thick as your little finger. You”d see them on the ears of glamorous actors pacing down the streets of New York, in movies depicting corporate big city life. It took a few years for them to make their way into the hands of almost every adult; and then, almost overnight, young children had them too!

Many people are opting out of home phones altogether, claiming they have become obsolete with the advent of the cell phone. While the modern technology is unquestionably convenient, it does have some drawbacks you may not notice at first glance. And the trusty home phone may not be as antiquated as you think.

In defense of the home phone: Internet service, security system monitoring, and fax machines all use home telephone lines. True, these services can be acquired through wireless means as well, but usually at a greater cost to you. And of course, there is something to be said for the degree of permanence you get from a land line.

People switch cell phone numbers so often that it can be difficult for business, friends, and even family to keep track of them. Are the days when kids only have to learn one address and one phone number for themselves gone forever?

That said, I am the last one who”d admit to being anti-cell phone. It is my constant companion, as important as my wallet, keys, and chapstick when I”m walking out the door. Cell phones are obviously convenient because you can take them anywhere. Most have built-in caller identification, text messaging, and call waiting.

Probably the greatest thing about it is that you can be reached anywhere, anytime.

But the greatest con? You can be reached anywhere, anytime.

Sometimes it’’s nice to have time for peace and quiet, where you can”t be interrupted. Having something glued to your ear all day long has several drawbacks. Many people have grown so dependent upon their cell phones that they feel naked if they leave them at home or the batteries run out.

Also, having to constantly remember to charge it, as well as the incessant monitoring of minutes and text message use, can be a pain. And don”t forget that as the technology improves, so will the number of advertisements popping up on your cell phone screen.

Some people have a land line that they use for neighbors or business, and a cell phone they use for friends and family only. It’’s nice to have a cell phone number separate from the one you write on credit card applications and give out to businesses, hopefully reducing the number of solicitation calls you get on it.

These days, it can seem almost impossible to live without a cell phone, and insane to criticize them. But make sure to consider all the reasons for your home phone before you pull the plug–literally.

An Overview of Walkie Talkies and Two Way Radios

October 31, 2008

By Constantine Lekendiros

Two way radios have become very popular in recent years. Even though cell phone technology has improved dramatically over the years the old walkie talkie technology has made a comeback. The reason is that walkie talkies are based on radio signals which in most cases are completely independent from any network. This means that anyone can communicate with a set of walkie talkies or two way radios with ease and without any extra costs. Walkie Talkies are portable communication devices that are based on of low-level radio transmitters and receivers.

The most popular design of a walkie talkie is the black bulgy transistor with a big antenna that one has to hold near his mouth before they speak. This image has changed over the years as walkie talkies have entered the mainstream. Design and technology has really changed the look and feel of Walkie Talkies. In addition, they are just an amazing toy for kids, it lets them have a lot of fun while playing around and communicating at the same time.

Aside from the entertainment uses of walkie talkies, two way radios have a series of business applications. Teams of workers use walkie talkies in large work areas where any other form of communication would not be sufficient. Using a walkie talkie is a great alternative to a cell phone when communicating to set number of individual two way radio users especially because cell phone calling fees can add up.

The concept of the walkie talkie or the two way radio has been around for a while. The term walkie talkie was used first in the 1940′’s to describe the usability of a portable two way radio manufactured by Motorola. The first radio receiver/transmitter to be nick-named “Walkie-Talkie” was the backpacked Motorola SCR-300. The first walkie-talkies were developed for military use during World War II, and spread to public safety and eventually commercial and job site work after the war.

Typical walkie-talkies resemble a telephone handset, possibly slightly larger but still a single unit, with an antenna sticking out of the top. In general, walkie-talkies are widely used in any setting where portable radio communications are necessary, including business, public safety, outdoor recreation, and the like, and devices are available at numerous price points. Walkie-talkies, thanks to increasing use of miniaturized electronics, can be made very small. Unlike alternative technologies, there are no monthly fees and this is one of the reasons why Motorola two way radios are so popular. Motorola two war radios o walkie talkies are one of the best of their kind and are reasonably priced.

There are many similarities between a telephone and a two way radio. Walkie-talkies resemble a telephone handset, slightly larger but still a single unit, with an antenna sticking out of the top. Whereas a phone’’s ear-piece is only loud enough to be heard by the user, a walkie-talkie’’s speaker can be heard by the user and those in his immediate vicinity. The best application of a walkie talkie is that it allows someone to keep in constant contact within a certain group of individuals. Walkie talkies have had and will have many additional applications in the future.

The Ever Useful Satellite Phone

October 30, 2008

By Corey Palmer

Satellite phone maybe considered as out of date type of phone today because of the rapid emerging of cellular phones that use cell sites to acquire the signal they need. If we compare all the satellite phones being sold in the world market, they are obviously outnumbered by the other one.

Also known as the satphone, this type of wireless handy phone are connected directly to the orbiting satellite in space, unlike those phones that rely on the signal coming from the cell sites around the area. Satphones can be used anywhere in the world, but some depends on the structure of the system which coverage are in limited areas only.

Just like any other things being created in this world, these phones also had evolved throughout the years since it was invented. The first of its kind had big sizes and heavy to hold, compare with the ones created during the late 80′’s and 90′’s which sizes are reduced to fit the hands of the users and much lighter. If there is only one thing that remained unchanged, it was the large antenna.

This type of phone is usually used in remote areas especially during calamities and emergencies other mobile phones are useless because of the unavailability of cell site services. However, satphones have poor receptions when used indoors, so the user must go outside and find some clearings to acquire good signal, or at least use it near the window or houses that have thin roofing. This amazing gadget had been very useful during September 11 attacks, Hurricane Katrina, the collapsed Minnesota bridge just last 2007, and the Hawaiian earthquake. Another citation on the advantage of using satphones among others is its services are not affected during the occurrence of natural calamities that usually destroy cell sites.

Although these can give us such communication services, there is still a negative thing that happens while using it. Knowing the distance it can reach, expect the delay in your conversations because its signal should travel to its space satellite first before reaching the earth again and finally to the one you are talking to.

Despite of this single disadvantage, we can never deny its usefulness to humans. We can be linked to a place where no man has ever been to. It can also connect us to our loved ones who are in the military or mountains.

Moving on, there are three big satellite phone networks that are presently operating. They are as follows:

Iridium - this network uses up to sixty six satellites that are called Low Earth Orbit or LEO located in our polar orbits about four hundred eighty miles above the sea level. This also offers a total global coverage.

Globalstar - this network however uses forty LEO satellites that as high as eight hundred seventy miles. This covers most places on earth but not all of it.

Thuraya - unlike the first two networks, this is one can only cover a few areas on earth that includes Middle East, Europe, Northern and Central Africa, and the Central Asia.

No matter how the calls and the satphone will cost, this gadget is definitely a must-have for its services are out-of-this-world.

Hydrogen Car Conversion - What\’s Possible And What You Need To Know First

October 30, 2008

By Peter Johnson

These days, more and more people have heard about hydrogen car conversion in their search for a viable alternative to gasoline. The situation in the Middle East and the damage that fossil fuels have done to our environment has everyone worried about the future. The good news is that there is something you can do right now to help alleviate the problem.

Hydrogen Cell vs Hydrogen Car Kit

Now, you probably think about hydrogen cell technology when you think of running your car on hydrogen, but that’’s not what hydrogen car kits are all about. The difference between the two is quite vast; hydrogen cell technology actually completely replaces the internal combustion engine with a new technology that does not use gasoline in any way. Conversion involves a simple process and a device that you can add to your pre-existing internal combustion engine. Hydrogen cell technology is still a long way off from being practical and available to the general public, but hydrogen conversion kits are available for use right now.

So what is hydrogen car conversion? Well, without getting too technical, it is essentially a small device that you attach to your car’’s battery and intake manifold. This device uses a small amount of energy from your battery to transform the water within it from H2O to HHO. This compound, which is one part oxygen and two parts hydrogen, is more commonly known as Brown’’s Gas. Brown’’s Gas, AKA Hydroxy or Water-Fuel, is a clean-burning fuel substitute that has only water as a byproduct and provides a lot of energy; some who have made the conversion report that their gas mileage has doubled in some cases.

Putting It Together

So where do you get the conversion kit? Well, conversion kits aren”t sold in stores, so you have to build one yourself. Don”t feel overwhelmed with that revelation, though - conversion kits are easy to assemble and there are plenty of websites that can tell you how to assemble it and what parts you need. The parts you need can be found at any hardware store and will generally run you about $20. These parts consist of a quart-sized glass jar, some electrical wiring, baking soda, a vacuum hose, a fuse, and a few other bits and pieces. Follow the directions, assemble the device and fill it with water. Next, hook the device up to your battery and your engine’’s intake manifold and your golden. If you don”t feel confident in your handiness, you can always get a mechanic to do it for you. Though they are hard to find, there are mechanics out there that are familiar with hydrogen car conversion and can do it for you. The conversion will cost you about $300 in most cases.

Conclusion

If you are concerned like the rest of us about the cost of gas and want to save money, then you should look into converting your car into a water hybrid with a hydrogen conversion kit. Hydrogen car conversion is the way to save some money, promote environmental conservation, and fuel our future.

Secrets Of Buying Digital Camera Equipments

October 28, 2008

By Roberto Sedycias

Digital cameras are sophisticated gadgets with the ability to review photos on the spot after taking it, deleting the unwanted images and making photography a real fun. The main reason why people chose them is the convenience of use and remarkable performance. But when it comes to purchasing digital cameras, it can be a daunting task to get into the right track.

Whether it is for professional or personal use, it may be a long term investment. Any hasty decision may lead to frustrating results about its performance and your satisfaction. So here are some valuable tips that can guide you while purchasing these equipments.

Set a basic budget:

First of all you need to make a trade-off between the digital camera that you need and the price. It is better to think practically about the purchase as you will not be able to get the best in every aspect of its features. So, before visiting any store, on-line or off-line, you need to consider about the budget on how much money you want to spend. Spending a large amount does not necessarily assure you of quality products.

Count on your experience:

Your experience is something that can guide you properly in the field of selecting the digital camera. Basically, stay away of ending up in buying unnecessary gadgets. If you are a novice user , pick the equipment that is mostly automated. For instance, the digital zoom is an important part of your digital camera, so while purchasing it, ensure that the camera produces the correct picture and gives the center view of the image.

If you are an expert or professional user, you may need to purchase equipments that give more manual control over the features. Therefore, it is essential to decide the purpose of buying them. The bottom-line is that you should buy digital camera equipments that you can actually use.

Do not compromise with the features:

When you are buying photographic equipments, you should have some particular uses in you mind. So purchase the one that satisfies mostly the features you require for. Again, do not get tempted with trendy looks. Look carefully into the features and then select the right one for you. It is not true that expensive digital camera equipments always have all those necessary features you need.

Decide your requirements:

If you are not sure of what you want from your digital camera equipments, you may end up buying the wrong one. For instance, in case of outdoor photography, a fast shutter sped is essential for moving objects. For taking multiple pictures in quick succession, you should buy digital camera equipment with special features.

Gather prior knowledge:

Whenever purchasing you should remember to have a list of extras such as memory cards and batteries. Hence, you need to learn about different types of equipments and their usages. There can not be any better way of gathering information than browsing through the World Wide Web. You can find reviews of the same products and price comparisons, which will help you to make your decision.

Also, you need to compare the price-performance ratio, as none of the two can be ignored while purchasing high-end gadgets. The best products are the ones that have the best overall package. So, make a good purchase and enjoy the freedom in photography with your digital camera.

Tips on How You Can Drastically Improve Your Cell Phones Battery Life

October 26, 2008

By Faraz Ahmed

Cell Phones have really improved in the previous decade. Cell phones did exist but were not that common, only business men or those people who could afford a cell phone could buy and use them. In those days cell phones were not only expensive but also very bulky in design. Cell phone services such as making calls and receiving calls were also very expensive. But all that changed in the previous decade. With advancements in technology, cell phones are becoming cheaper by the day. They are also becoming smaller and more portable. Today almost everyone above the age of twelve owns a cell phone. Some people are using their cell phones in place of their landlines.

But these handy little devices require delicate care. They are electronic devices so the standard rules of all electronic devices also applies to cell phones that is, they should be kept away from water, kept away from humid places, should not be left in the sun for long periods and so on. But when we talk about performance of cell phones the first thing that comes to mind is the cell phone battery life. Cell phone batteries on a single charge may work for ten hours or two days; this depends on how we use it.

There are various ways by which we can improve the battery life and battery charge time of our cell phones. Some of these methods are explained below.

Turn it off:

The simplest way to improve your cell phone battery life is to turn it off when you do not need it. For example many people don”t turn off their cell phones before going to sleep. This is a waste. If you are not going to use it then turn it off. Turn off your cell phones before going to seep.

No Signal?

Similarly if you are in an area where there are no cell phone signals or your network provider does not over that area then you should turn off your cell phone. Because if a cell phone cannot find any signal or network then it will keep searching for one till it finds a compatible network. This really drains your battery and you will notice that your battery will be completely drained within three or four hours.

Turn off Vibrator:

Use ring tones instead of the vibration function when in public places. This is because the vibrator consumes a lot of power. So if you feel that you can hear the ring tone even if your cell phone is in your pocket then it is best to turn off your vibrator.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth:

Connectivity options such as wifi and Bluetooth consume power when turned on. If you do not use them then you should turn them off to preserve battery life.

Multimedia Consumes Power like Nothing else:

Multimedia such as camera, videos and mp3 songs consume a lot of battery power. Try to use these options as little as possible or only when needed. Also if your cell phone camera came with a flash then it is best to turn off your flash when taking pictures in the daytime.

Saving Your Water Damaged Cell Phone

October 26, 2008

By Aydan Corkern

How many electronic gadgets do you have to carry around with you everyday to conduct your business? It could be two, three, or even more. Some business people can not make it through a busy day without their cell phone, laptop, blackberry, or PDA. It is a almost a shame that we need all of these things just to communicate with the rest of the world, but that is how it is done today. You either keep up or you get left behind and that is the truth.

When you lose one of these valuable assets, it can wreak havoc on your life because you have so much valuable information stored in them. It is not that uncommon to have information in your cell phone that you do not have duplicated in your laptop or vice versa. We depend on these items so much that we sometimes forget what a pickle we might be in if we do lose them or they get damaged.

Getting water or some other liquid spilled onto one of these things can be disastrous. It always happens when you least expect it because if you expected it you would have been more careful in the first place. Some of these items can usually cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars and may or may not be insured. When you do have them insured, it might be simple enough to have them replaced, but that will not restore the information you had in the old one.

Liquid soaked electronics may have more hope than you thought. Many times a cell phone can be dropped into water when you are bathing, near a swimming pool or other body of water, while you wash dishes, or just get something spilled onto them. Laptops can have things spilled on them or could even be damaged because of a home or business flood. Whatever the reason they got wet do not throw them away before you check into having them restored.

When water is spilled into electronics, many times it is only a matter of letting them dry out. This might not be the case every time, but it does not hurt to try it before you take it in for repair. Other liquids like coffee, soda, or juices might prove to be a little more difficult. You can take them to an electronics repair business and inquire as to the possibility of it being saved. It might cost you a deposit up front that you might not get back even if they can not fix your item. It will be up to you to decide whether it is worth investing the money in having it repaired or whether buying a new one is the best choice. Sometimes if a repair person can get the laptop or other item working again does not always mean the information it had stored in it will still be intact.

Water Fuel Is The Hidden Technology That We Need To Develop

October 25, 2008

By Gav Shannon

Water fuel is old technology, with the coming oil crises this technology now rediscovered will help us get through itYou can double your mileage with this simple clean burn technology, greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and you get greater horsepower through water power.

With the world covered to a large extent with salt water fuel of this type would be the best type of clean fuel for the world. If you get a chance check out this great clip on YouTube about saline water gas and is just the most wildest inventions produced in the last hundred years

New Zealand inventor, Steve Ryan, claims to have produced a way of using water used as fuel directly, in contrast to using water as a source of Hydrogen, which then serves as the combustible fuel.

Lately, the company has produced proprietary catalyst
that mixes waste oil with water to produce gas. The combinations are in the process of being tested by the EPA in the U.S., the results of which are expected in the early months of 2008.

Environmentally friendly gas is made by “pressure cooking” low-rank coal to dehydrate the particles and give off waxes and resins, leaving the dust in a safe, high-energy state, with the extracted water holding the suspended particles. The water is treated and then put back to the dried coal. The end product is a viscus liquid fuel that looks and moves like oil: Environmentally friendly fuel.

While you can break water down to ignite there is another way, and they do so in the form of a fuel cell, however it’’s for an electric vehicle. It uses electrolysis but rather than using the hydrogen to gas an motor, it’’s passed through a membrane which strips it of an electron which is used for the vehicle’’s electric system but allows the hydrogen atom to pass and recombine itself with the electron on the other side, also bonding with oxygen atoms creating an exhaust of water.

While a large amount of fuel cell slices are needed to gain a quantum amount of power, which produces a large electrical potential for the electrolysis, gains in battery technology (such as the Lithium Ion batteries used in the 2nd gen. Pruis) and regenerative braking make it a nice alternative.

Zubrin describes the concept in his writings, using NSWR for a round trip mission to Titan, Saturn’’s largest moon. the chemical form of a soluble salt (uranium tetra-bromide) would fuel the NSWR that would bedissolved in ordinary water at about the same atom number concentration as the salt in sea water.

Who is Selling the Best Smart Phone?

October 25, 2008

By Shawn Wilson

I will endeavor to do a quick overview of the iPhone and the Blackberry Storm. First off they are both full screen smart phones. They both give you the ability to send and receive emails, open attachments in various formats, they both have a camera and video built in, they both allow you to play MP3′’s, they both run on the 3G network and they both have built in satellite navigation.

Now that we know that they are both quite similar where are the differences. First off Apple created the portable MP3 market and unless you”re like me and hate iTunes the Apple will win in the music player department for most The other piece to notice is that the iPhone comes with a substantially larger built in hard drive, where the Storm wins is the fact that it’’s hard drive is expandable to as large as a micro SD will handle which today is 16 GB.

Next stop is emailing which the Storm wins hands down, the Blackberry was originally designed to run emails and send and receive them very quickly. You can program your iPhone to send and receive in quick intervals but that Storm is designed to send you the email as soon as the network receives it.

Keyboards, if you have ever used an iPhone before you”ll have to admit the keyboard sucks and takes forever to get used it. It’’s so called smart key system doesn”t work which for business in my opinion makes the iPhone useless. The Storm has the most amazing keyboard which for the first time ever uses a full screen that depresses and clicks each time you type. Finally a full screen that still gives you the touch and feel of the old qwerty keyboards!

The GPS navigation system for both works very well I was told that the Storm is the only one with voice navigation. I have been unable to verify whether or not the iPhone does or doesn”t have this feature. They both are easy to use and the maps are easy to read.

The camera’’s on both units are very similar, while I realize many of us use the camera’’s on our phones I have to be honest I am a camera buff and usually have a digital SLR near me at any given time. While both units take similar picture quality and both have 3.2 megapixel camera’’s in my opinion they take horrible pictures.

I would have to say at the end of the day if you run a business and emails are important then the Storm is the superior unit. If you”re under the age of 25 and you want a unit that will allow you t have fun the iPhone is for you. Happy shopping both of these units are fantastic at the end of the day!
