It is pretty much self-evident that the majority of the population, in the US at least, is very much “attached” to their cellular phones. At the same time, folks like to be able to express their personalities with unique cellular ringtones on those beloved cell phones. And, people can find just about any type of ring tone that they can think of just by spending a little time at some of the many websites that offer free cell phone ringtones to their visitors.
In the last 20 years or so, we have witnessed many major strides in the area of technology, but not many of them have become as pervasive and popular, and even “viral” as the mobile phone. But, with the popularity of cell phones there is also a bit of a problem in terms of being able to be unique and stand out from the crowd. Much of that issue has been solved through the ready availability of free cell ringtones.
Once people have collected a good variety of free cell phone ringtones on their phones, they will be able to select different caller ringtones for each person in their phone book who calls regularly. This is a great help to the cell phone user who can identify who is trying to reach them without having to look at their phone. At the same time, this helps dispel confusion in a situation when a room is packed with cell phone wielding people.
When the idea of having many different caller ringtones first came about, the cellular phone companies seemed to be pretty eager to offer their customers lots of downloadable ringtones as part of their contracts and as an added customer bonus. But, after awhile, these same companies realized that they could add a whole new profit center to their business by charging for real music ringtones or for other specialty types of ring tones. As the cell phone companies started charging these fees, many websites offering free cell ringtones cropped up to fill in the gap.
Of course, not all ringtones that people want are free, yet. There are many specialty ringtones and real music ringtones of current top 10 songs that cost money. Because of the issues of paying royalties for such music there will probably always be some that have to be purchased. But the good news is that there will also always be internet sites that will be eager to draw in new visitors by offering free cell phone ringtones.

Microsoft and Apple are two powerhouses when it comes to the computer related and consumer electronics industry. Both of these companies have many similarities and differences with each other, and they both went corporate within several years of each other.
Lets start with some information about Apple. The corporation was formerly known as Apple Computer, Inc. but changed the name to Apple Inc. eventually. Apple focuses on manufacturing and designing consumer electronics and closely related software products.
They are best known for their personal computer, the Macintoish, the media player known as the iPod, and recently the iPhone. All of these products have received great reviews and are only getting better with time and technology advances. From Warner Brothers maps to having GPS on your phone, technology has definitely made leaps and bounds in the recent years.
Along the lines of software, Apple products include the iLife suite of multimedia and creativity software, Final Cut Studio relating to audio and film industry, iTunes media browser, and most popular the Mac OS X operating system. Currently there are over two hundred retail stores in seven different countries as well as an online store where practically every Apple product that is currently being made is sold.
The iTunes store is also available which has recently expanded their depths into selling. They now provide music, television programs, music videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and iPod games which can be downloaded to your Mac OS X or Windows and then put onto your iPhone or iPod touch.
The company was established in 1976, and has been growing ever since. The annual sales in its fiscal year 2007 were 24.01 billion dollars. A great acheivement for the company that continues to grow.
Now onto the Microsoft Corporation. This comapny is an American multinational computer technology corporation that develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a great range of software products for computer devices. They are best known for the Microsoft Windows operating system as well as the Microsoft Office series.
Bill Gates became the richest man in the world through this company, and although he no longer holds that spot, being the second richest man in the world is nothing to be upset about. Recently Bill Gates has thrown in the towel and stepped down from Microsoft Corporation to further pursue his charity organization.
One of the visions that he had for Microsoft was to have a workstation running Microsoft software in every office desk and home. Microsoft has been so successful over the years that due to the release of an initial public offering in the stock market, Microsoft made 12,000 millionaires and four billionaires from their employees.
Microsoft is also very popular in several other markets too, such as the mouse and home entertainment products. These consist of the Zune, MSN TV, Xbox, and Xbox 360. With all of these streams of revenue coming in for Microsoft, they have made strides to purchase the powerhouse search engine Yahoo. Unforunately, their offer of 44.6 billion dollars did not satisfy Yahoo.
As you can see, Microsoft and Zune have had huge strides throughout the years. There is definitely some intense competition between the two especially for the computer market with all of the Apple commercials using Microsoft as a dummy. That’’s pretty brave of Apple to be throwing punches at the big guy in the computer industry, but it seems to be working.
You will definitely be seeing these two corporations continue to dominate when it comes to releasing software and hardware that uses the newest and most advanced technology. Both of these companies specialize in certain hardware and software products of their own, but it seems that for every line that Microsoft has, Apple has too and vice versa.

GPS or Global Positioning System navigation devices are probably the greatest technological advancements to hit the general public since the cell phone. These days, just about almost every family has a couple of navigation devices available in their cars, a testament to how important, user friendly and helpful the gadgets can be.
When vehicular GPS navigation devices for everyday use first hit the market a few years ago, everybody wanted to have one (in that regard, they were kind of like the famous Apple iPhone). Stores could not keep GPS navigation devices in stock, everyone got one for Christmas and just about everyone loved how they worked. Even the cheaper versions of navigation devices work fairly well, and as the years went by the technology began to get better and better for the gadgets.
Today, navigation devices can do everything but cook you breakfast in the morning. They can direct you to the nearest hair salon or grocery stores as easily as they can get you to the hospital, and if you run into construction on your way to visit Grandma, they can navigate you around it without breaking a sweat.
One of the coolest things about GPS navigation devices is that they will actually give you turn by turn directions, so you never have to miss a single thing. Even if you do miss a turn (by some random stroke of misfortune), it is really not a big deal. Because navigation devices always know where you are, they will still give you turn by turn directions until you are back on the right track. After you have gotten to where you are going and have done whatever it was that you went there for, GPS navigation devices will even get you on the road back home, again telling you each time you need to change direction.
Because they have been on the market for quite a few years now, navigation devices are now more affordable than ever. Plus, the quality of GPS navigation devices has remarkably gone up, as new technological advancements make them more accurate and simple to operate. Usually, you can find high quality GPS navigation devices in stores for $500 or less, depending on where you go to make the purchase. However, if you are smart and patient in waiting for them to go on sale, you can often save yourself more a couple hundred dollars.

There used to be a time when you sat down in front of the television and watched television in mono sound on a screen smaller than the one you are viewing this article on. Today televisions have grown in size and capability and the home cinema and home entertainment system has come of age. Televisions come in all sizes from ones on your mobile phone to 150-inches large.
But what is the best way to set up a home cinema system in your living room and what do you need to make it work? Here is a simple check sheet to make sure you don”t miss anything out.
Television or projector?
The first decision you are going to have to make is whether or not you want to have a projector or a standard LCD or Plasma television. The advantage of a projector is that you”ll get a larger picture, however you”ll need to factor in changing the bulbs every couple of thousand hours (not that long considering you probably watch around 20 hours of television a week) and while projector technology has improved drastically over the last couple of years, they still need a fairly dark room and a white wall to be viewed.
LCD or Plasma?
So you”ve decided to go for a television over a projector, now you need to decide whether or not to go for plasma or LCD technology. The main criteria will be size. Under 46-inches you can”t really tell the difference. However your choice will be restricted if you opt for plasma with Pioneer’’s Kuro range the one to go for if your plans are to go big. If you are going LCD then there are a number of manufacturers that offer solutions from Samsung, LG, Philips, Sony, Sharp and Toshiba. Philips has Ambilight for those looking for something a bit different. Ambilight fires light out of the back, and with its Aurea model out the front, that matches the colours on the screen. The idea is that it reduces strain on your eyes.
Amp.
Once you”ve got the visuals out of the way you need to look at the sound and you start with an amp. Amps again come in all shapes and sizes with complete kits offered by companies like Samsung and LG, while companies like Denon and Arcam specialise in a system that you add components like a DVD player or games console to. An amp is also good for controlling all your different devices within your home entertainment system.
Speakers.
You”ve got an amp, but now you need to hear the music. Yamaha and a couple of other manufacturers make a single speaker that sits under your television called a Soundbar. This saves on cluttering up your lounge with speakers, however for audiophiles it won”t beat a 7.1 surround system where there are speakers everywhere you look.
DVD/Blu-ray/Content.
Once you”ve got a compete system set up you need something to play on its. If you are into movies you”ll need to get a good up-scalling DVD or if you”re an early adopter a Blu-ray player. Of course you can also get HD movies and TV shows via Sky’’s HD service.
Remote controls.
Having all this kit will mean a remote control for virtually every device. Rather than clutter up your armchair’’s sofa, make sure you look at getting an all in one offering from either Philips or Logitech.
Hopefully this information will help you to create a home cinema that provides you with an unrivalled viewing experience.

The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.
The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don”t find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science and he believes people should take action now especially when it comes to children.
“Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn”t wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later,” Herberman said.
No other major academic cancer research institutions have sounded such an alarm about cell phone use. But Herberman’’s advice is sure to raise concern among many cell phone users and especially parents.
In the memo he sent to about 3,000 faculty and staff Wednesday, he says children should use cell phones only for emergencies because their brains are still developing.
Adults should keep the phone away from the head and use the speakerphone or a wireless headset, he says. He even warns against using cell phones in public places like a bus because it exposes others to the phone’’s electromagnetic fields.
The issue that concerns some scientists though nowhere near a consensus is electromagnetic radiation, especially its possible effects on children. It is not a major topic in conferences of brain specialists.
A 2008 University of Utah analysis looked at nine studies including some Herberman cites with thousands of brain tumor patients and concludes “we found no overall increased risk of brain tumors among cellular phone users. The potential elevated risk of brain tumors after long-term cellular phone use awaits confirmation by future studies.”
Studies last year in France and Norway concluded the same thing.
“If there is a risk from these products and at this point we do not know that there is it is probably very small,” the Food and Drug Administration says on an agency Web site.
Still, Herberman cites a “growing body of literature linking long-term cell phone use to possible adverse health effects including cancer.”
“Although the evidence is still controversial, I am convinced that there are sufficient data to warrant issuing an advisory to share some precautionary advice on cell phone use,” he wrote in his memo.
A driving force behind the memo was Devra Lee Davis, the director of the university’’s center for environmental oncology.
“The question is do you want to play Russian roulette with your brain,” she said in an interview from her cell phone while using the hands-free speaker phone as recommended. “I don”t know that cell phones are dangerous. But I don”t know that they are safe.”
Of concern are the still unknown effects of more than a decade of cell phone use, with some studies raising alarms, said Davis, a former health adviser in the Clinton Administration.
She said 20 different groups have endorsed the advice the Pittsburgh cancer institute gave, and authorities in England, France and India have cautioned children’’s use of cell phones.
Herberman and Davis point to a massive ongoing research project known as Interphone, involving scientists in 13 nations, mostly in Europe. Results already published in peer-reviewed journals from this project aren”t so alarming, but Herberman is citing work not yet published.
The published research focuses on more than 5,000 cases of brain tumors. The National Research Council in the U.S., which isn”t participating in the Interphone project, reported in January that the brain tumor research had “selection bias.” That means it relied on people with cancer to remember how often they used cell phones. It is not considered the most accurate research approach.
The largest published study, which appeared in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 2006, tracked 420,000 Danish cell phone users, including thousands that had used the phones for more than 10 years. It found no increased risk of cancer among those using cell phones.
A French study based on Interphone research and published in 2007 concluded that regular cell phone users had “no significant increased risk” for three major types of nervous system tumors. It did note, however, that there was “the possibility of an increased risk among the heaviest users” for one type of brain tumor, but that needs to be verified in future research.
Earlier research also has found no connection.
Joshua E. Muscat of Penn State University, who has studied cancer and cell phones in other research projects partly funded by the cell phone industry, said there are at least a dozen studies that have found no cancer-cell phone link. He said a Swedish study cited by Herberman as support for his warning was biased and flawed.
“We certainly don”t know of any mechanism by which radiofrequency exposure would cause a cancerous effect in cells. We just don”t know this might possibly occur,” Muscat said.
Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy, a type of radiation that is a form of electromagnetic radiation, according to the National Cancer Institute. Though studies are being done to see if there is a link between it and tumors of the brain and central nervous system, there is no definitive link between the two, the institute says on its Web site.
“By all means, if a person feels compelled that they should take precautions in reducing the amount of electromagnetic radio waves through their bodies, by all means they should do so,” said Dan Catena, a spokesman for the American Cancer Society. “But at the same time, we have to remember there’’s no conclusive evidence that links cell phones to cancer, whether it’’s brain tumors or other forms of cancer.”
Joe Farren, a spokesman for the CTIA-The Wireless Association, a trade group for the wireless industry, said the group believes there is a risk of misinforming the public if science isn”t used as the ultimate guide on the issue.
“When you look at the overwhelming majority of studies that have been peer reviewed and published in scientific journals around the world, you”ll find no relationship between wireless usage and adverse health affects,” Farren said.
Frank Barnes, who chaired the January report from the National Research Council, said Wednesday that “the jury is out” on how hazardous long-term cell phone use might be.
Speaking from his cell phone, the professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder said he takes no special precautions in his own phone use. And he offered no specific advice to people worried about the matter.
It’’s up to each individual to decide what if anything to do. If people use a cell phone instead of having a land line, “that may very well be reasonable for them,” he said.
Susan Juffe, a 58-year-old Pittsburgh special education teacher, heard about Herberman’’s cell phone advice on the radio earlier in the day.
“Now, I”m worried. It’’s scary,” she said.
She says she”ll think twice about allowing her 10-year-old daughter Jayne to use the cell phone.
“I don”t want to get it (brain cancer) and I certainly don”t want you to get it,” she explained to her daughter.
Sara Loughran, a 24-year-old doctoral student at the University of Pittsburgh, sat in a bus stop Wednesday chatting on her cell phone with her mother. She also had heard the news earlier in the day, but was not as concerned.
“I think if they gave me specific numbers and specific information and it was scary enough, I would be concerned,” Loughran said, planning to call her mother again in a matter of minutes. “Without specific numbers, it’’s too vague to get me worked up.”

In several months or years, you”ll rediscover them. By then, the phones will seem worthless to you, so you”ll probably discard them and subsequently, the phones will end up in the local landfill.
How do you recycle cell phones?
Passing your old phones on to family or friends is the simplest method of recycling. The majority of the phones we discard for an updated model or after switching service providers remain completely usable and functional. If you give it to a friend or family member, you”ll be sure that the phone will have an additional year or two of use. However, this merely stretches out the phone’’s life cycle. You can help the environment by telling the person receiving the phone to recycle it properly when the time comes.
You can actually return your old cell phones to the manufacturer for recycling. The leading US service providers and manufacturers such as Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint have cell phone take-back programs with free shipping and/or discounts in subsequent purchases. They”ll ensure that the phones are refurbished or recycled in an environmentally safe manner. The companies receive a steady flow of recycled materials for producing new things while you ensure that your old phones are recycled safely and you receive discounts as well.
Donate your phones to your favorite charity or non-profit organization. A lot of these groups collect old cell phones and sell them to recyclers and refurbishers to raise funds. You can work with other non-profit organizations and even request material assistance from recycling companies if you wish to initiate a similar project in your area. Even children are getting involved with these projects. Zoos often place cell phone collection boxes near the entrance. Raising funds for a noble cause will put good use to something that would have been useless or even harmful if discarded inappropriately.
Recycle cell phones through refurbishing and recycling companies. Selling your old or used phones to businesses is quick and easy. Everything can be done on the internet in several minutes. Just visit the company’’s website, check the actual buying price of your phone, and request a shipping label. After receiving the pre-paid labels, package your phones and mail them to the company. The company usually sends you the check within 4 business days of receiving your package.
There’’s plenty of opportunity to improve our efforts to recycle cell phones. As more consumers learn the importance of recycling cell phones, we will be able to increase the recycling rate across the nation.

Everybody loves saving money. The reason that they love it so much is that they will either have more money to spend on other things or just enough to spend on certain things. Money is the commodity in life that modern cultures simply cannot do without.
That is why the greatest advantage to purchasing a refurbished GPS is the cost. You see, refurbished items are often sold at a high markdown because the item originally had a mechanical malfunction or a cosmetic problem. Whatever the problem was has been fixed (in the case of a mechanical flaw) or does not affect the actual function of the GPS (as is the case with the cosmetic problem). Therefore, a refurbished item is just a cheaper version of a ”new” item with a past.
Now it is important that we establish that neither of these difference from the ”new” GPS is any reason not to buy a refurbished device. In fact, one of them provides a very strong reason to go out of your way to buy a refurbished item - namely its lower price. Refurbished electronics can be reduced by up to 60% of the original retail value. It is probably safer to guess 20%, but that is still a very large discount.
I would take a 20% discount on anything that I thought was equally as good as another product. Some people might even say that I would be stupid to do otherwise.
So the fact that the refurbished GPS costs less than a ”new” GPS is actually a strong argument for buying the former type of device. What about the fact that it has a history of breaking? Is not that something to consider?
Well, consider a car for a second. It is my opinion that these mechanical contraptions are the main reason most people believe that if something is broken once, it will only break again and again. In day to day life, these vehicles always seem to have problems in clumps.
If you get a flat tire one day; the next you smell burning oil; and then you find out that a fan belt broke; and then you notice some radiator fluid underneath your car; then the door handle breaks; and on and on the cycle goes. This can be really frustrating and big money drain. If that is what a refurbished item is like we do not want to have any part in it.
But let us take a closer look at these problems. Tires have absolutely no relation to our engine burning oil, or with our door handles, or even with a fan belt. The real reasons these problems are cropping up is a lack of proper maintenance or natural wear and tear on the components, not because a car with a flat tire is more prone to have other non-working parts.
So when a GPS unit has a scratch on its side or an internal component was replaced because it was manufactured with a defect, it is no more likely to break down than a ”new” item is. The wear and tear that would result in something breaking is just as likely to affect the ”new” model as it would a refurbished one because now both are being subjected to the use by the end-user. The end-user can make his GPS last as long as he maintains it properly and keeps it in working condition.
As you can see, there is no real reason not to buy a refurbished GPS. These devices are just as useful as their ”new” counterparts and have an attractive price point on top of that. They are definitely a win-win.

Saving our planet is important, but that doesn”t mean you have to live in a tree and forgo your gadget pleasures. There are plenty of gadgets out there that will help you live a greener life and while most LCD televisions don”t come with a way to turn them off you can get devices to help combat that. Here are some of my favourite ones.
Cranking MP3 player.
With a 1GB capacity and a design that won”t win any red dot awards, the main USP for this new MP3 player is its green credentials. One minute’’s worth of cranking will give you playback of 10 minutes - although there is USB charging too for when your arm gets tired. Including shipping, it”ll cost 55 euros, which is around 43 pounds, but consider what you”ll save on batteries.
Husqvarna solar powered automatic lawnmower.
It might set you back a cool 2000 pounds but working autonomously, the lawnmower will cut up to 2300 square metres of grass and can be programmed to come on at certain times or days of the week. Users can define the cutting area by laying a metal wire around the edge of their garden. The auto mower also has sensors in the device so it can avoid garden furniture. Solving the problem of collecting the grass, the motor’’s three sharp blades cut the grass short enough as to scatter it back on the lawn. The mower will cut for around 40 minutes, and then charge for 40 minutes in its charging station, however the solar panels on its back mean that on a sunny day the device will be able to stay out cutting for up to 50 percent longer.
Efergy meter.
The Efergy meter is a compact monitor that allows the user to see electricity consumption in real time in your home. Made up of three components: a portable display monitor, a sensor which is clipped around the power cable feeding electricity into the premises, and a transmitter which is connected to the sensor and which sends the information to the monitor the data on the screen of the Efergy meter is refreshed every 5 seconds, so the impact on power usage of turning an electrical appliance on or off can be seen immediately. The Efergy meter costs 44.95.
The Standby Buster.
You want to turn your television off at the main, but the sockets at the back and out of the reach of your arm. The Stanby buster basically gives you a remote for your plug. The easy to use, remote-controlled electrical socket lets you switch off multiple appliances completely rather than leaving them in standby mode - all from a single button press. Sockets are simply plugged into existing power outlets allowing any connected appliances to be switched on and off using the remote control. Standby Buster uses Radio Frequency (RF) rather than Infra-Red (IR) to switch appliances on and off, so it is not impaired by objects in its way.
Moixa USBCELL batteries.
The USBCELL as an environmentally-friendly alternative to normal AA batteries. The top of one side flips up to reveal a USB connector, and the battery simply plugs into an open port. It takes five hours to charge one of the cells if it was fully discharged; each battery has a capacity of 1300 mAH. The USBCELL cost around 12.99 for two AA batteries.
These eco friendly gadgets are becoming increasingly popular as people have a growing environmental conscience.

There has been a huge controversy regarding the health risks that mobile phones pose to humans through their usage. Innumerable studies have been conducted in order to find out whether such a problem actually exist or it is just rumours? However the studies have not been able to provide a clear picture of the existing controversy.
Mobile phones emit radiations that according to some scientists is hazardous to health and might cause brain tumour and other related ailments. But there is no solid evidence to evaluate the risks among long-term, heavy users and for potentially long induction periods. It is commonly seen as a result of many studies that it may take at least 10 years of mobile phone exposure before researchers are able to detect any significant increase in related concerns.
So, after scrutinizing the entire situation, it is advisable to follow some safety tips to help reduce your microwave exposure:
- use an ear piece or Bluetooth as it will help directing the microwave exposure away from your head where the vulnerable areas of the brains have been shown to have the risk factors
- try to avoid giving kids cell phones as much as possible
- always receive a call from the left ear, because if you use the right one, it may affect brain directly.
However, these days mobile phones are created with highly advanced technology using the best materials and components. No brand can sustain in the market if its products are not safe and secure for the consumers
Ironically, and to our benefit, not all studies have shown negative results. So, at the end of the day, until this controversy settles down, it is advisable to be a little cautious while using your phones to be on the safer side as no one can do without them.
