What Are The Causes Of Roof Leaks?

June 17, 2008

By David Cathey

Roof leaks are caused by several factors. Usually, it is not one of these things alone that causes leakage, but a number of these combining to break down the protective covering over the building. These factors or conditions are as follows:

1. Poor Roof Construction — This has become a serious problem in the past 15 years or so. Due to constant changes in the economy, the bidding on new structures (which includes virtually every kind of building including schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, shopping malls, and industrial buildings) has become so fierce that to get the job the roofing contractors must cut corners.

The roofing contractors must fight the weather to meet completion deadlines. Oftentimes installation continues during unfavorable weather conditions. Sometimes moisture is trapped in the roofing system and can contribute to early failure of the roof.

The results of corner cutting are cropping up, all across the country, in the form of inadequate roof insulation, poor roof decks, and the use of 2-ply instead of 3-ply and 4-ply paper in building the new roof. It is now not uncommon for a new roof to leak not long after it has been laid down.

2. Normal Aging and Weathering - A roof begins to deteriorate the day it is constructed. Its main enemy is the weather. It takes a pounding from the sun, rain, snow and sleet; it is scorched by intense summer heat and buffeted by high winds from storms. The sun dries out the roofing paper; causes the tar to run and sag, weakening the roof mat. As this oxidation soaks the oils out of the paper, it becomes brittle and subject to cracking and splitting; and when the weather suddenly changes, the extreme expansion and contraction brings the ultimate disaster - A roof leak!

3. Settling of the Building - All buildings settle; It is their nature, but some settle much more than others. When a building settles at an abnormal rate, this puts great stress on the roof. This unusual movement can, and will, create enough strain to cause a roof leak, which if left ignored will result in a general roof breakdown.

4. Vibrations - Some of these result from natural phenomena such as earth tremors, severe storms such as tornadoes and hurricanes. Even buildings located many miles from such an act of nature can get enough impact to put a strain on the building, which in turn carried to the roof can contribute to a roof leak. Other vibrations from machines, equipment, air conditioners, railroads and truck traffic cause early failure.

5. Mechanical Damage - Much more prevalent than you might think. In today’’s technology, it has become standard to put many pieces of equipment on the roofs; air conditioning units, phone and TV antennas, sign supports, elevator housings etc., which presents a serious problem for two reasons.

A. They put extra weight on the roof.

B. They require servicing, and every time a serviceman goes on a roof there is some danger of damage being done. Even harmlessly using a small ladder on a roof can make a small break in a flashing, which unknown to the building owner can result in leakage and damage.

How To Use Marine GPS Units

June 17, 2008

By Phoenix Delray

The most common misconception out there right now is that you need to have an extensive amount of sea knowledge in order to be able to operate any of the Marine GPS units. This is simply not true and manufacturers have developed and designed Marine GPS units so that they can be used by the everyday man or woman.

The very first step in starting to use Marine GPS units is looking into planning your voyage. So, essentially this means that the first step is done before you even step out onto the water at all. This device is so imperative to anyone who is traveling on any type of water because it has the potential to save lives, which is not something anyone wants to overlook. In addition to saving lives, its main function is to keep you from getting lost when you are away from land.

Marine GPS units were originally used by the Coast Guard to be able to track ships as they traveled along various coastlines. This gave them an idea as to what direction they were heading in and how quickly they were traveling. It also enabled them to maintain communication between them and the vessel in case any problematic situations should arise. This was in the time when if you ran into trouble on the open seas or found yourself lost, your only option was to contact the Cost Guard with your radio to summon help. Now, with the help of the latest Marine GPS units, you can handle these types of situations on your own and be able to weather any type of storm.

Marine GPS units have an advanced amount of technology that allow you to plan your route, determine your exact location, and figure out where you destination is and how you can get there safely. This type of technology also allows you to avoid collisions with other sea crafts that have been known to cause sever injuries, fatalities and, excessive and extreme damage to the vessel.

There is a very large variety of Marine GPS units on the market today, so it is imperative that you learn about them before making any kind of purchase. These products range from voice enabled computer systems to just your basic, simple radar based GPS systems. There is a very large range in prices because companies wanted to make them available to every income bracket. Marine GPS units have changed the way people travel by water and continue to make the waterways a safer place for everyone.

Journey Of Microphone From Wired To Wireless

June 16, 2008

By Victor Epand

The word microphone has actually come from two Greek words, micro that means small and phone that means voice. Microphone’’s history started with the telephone transmitter, which was developed by Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Grey simultaneously.

The first microphone can be called a variable resistance device. That had a mouthpiece, which was funnel shaped and its membrane diaphragm was stretched. The membrane diaphragm was the base of this mouthpiece. A metal cup used to be there just below the diaphragm. A metal pin used to go down to the cup right through the diaphragm. There was dilute acid in the cup. The fix resistance was shown by an ohmmeter that was located between the pin and the cup. If the diaphragm moves, then the pin also moves up and down with it in the liquid. And this makes the resistance vary accordingly. This microphone was a wired microphone.

In 1900 telephone transmitter was the only kind of microphone which was available. Several new kinds of microphones emerged after the radio power increased. Multiple microphones were used in those days. They used to have only one mouthpiece.

Lt Ditchman started another system. He put a set of microphones in a stand and rotated them in the intervals. He did this to avoid their overheating. But these multiple microphones had some drawbacks. One of the most serious problems was that if one of the microphones faced a short circuit problem then it spread rapidly to the others. Rudolph Goldschmidt patented a circuit that later solved this problem.

In 1879-81, Edison and Dolbear invented the condenser transmitter. Previously it was made for telephones, so it was not very good for microphones. But later on it was redeveloped and made suitable for them.

By 1906, Fessenden invented two microphones which were able to handle 15 Amperes of current and that too without burning up. One of them was of condenser type and the other one was of watercooled carbon granule type.

These are all wired microphones. But as time passed, wired microphone started becoming a bit problematic for people. People wanted something which will be more user-friendly and which will give them some added facilities. In order to satisfy that need wireless microphones were invented.

In the year 1951 John. F. Stephens made a wireless microphone. Actually he made it for a navy musical show. In that show, each and every player and singer was given one piece each.

A manufacturer of German Audio Equipment called Senheisser exhibited one wireless microphone. Telefunkun marketed this product as Microport from 1958 onwards.

There is a bit of confusion about who was the actual inventor of this tool. A German equipment manufacturer called Beyerdynamic claimed that Hung.C.Lin invented the first ever-wireless microphone. They also claimed that a film called ”My Fair Lady” first used this type of microphone in the year 1964. Rex Harrison was the actor who first used this.

Are Radar Jammers Worth The Price To Pay ?

June 16, 2008

By MIKE SELVON

For most people, driving the speed limit is just common sense. The safer you drive, the less likely you are to be in an accident. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way. There are, and will always be, a select group of people who forget that highways are not international speedways.

For these people, avoiding a speeding ticket can be tricky. With the use of radar jammers, however, it is becoming increasingly common for them to avoid being caught. A radar detector jammer scrambles the signals emitted from detector radar devices, allowing the speeder to get away.

Radar jammers, as the name signifies, are compact devices used primarily to scramble detector radar signals, particularly those emanating from speed guns used by policemen. Now that you know, you”ll probably ask, “Are they legal?” While purchase of a radar detector jammer is permissible by law, the now amended Communications Act of 1934 clearly stipulates that intentional use of a radar detector jammer will be construed as malicious interference.

Contravention of these laws can invite heavy fines and/or imprisonment. Before investing in a radar jamming unit, it would be advisable to first check state laws governing their ownership and use, as well as the models and types permitted. There are basically two types of car radar jamming devices available; active and passive.

Several models are available with approximately 90% of the models falling within the latter category. Active jammers constitute a mere 10%; however, it is important to note that this type is considered illegal by the US federal government since December 1997.

Since radar jammers are purchased for the purpose of avoiding a speeding ticket, it would only make sense that marketing and advertisements would try to emphasize their effectiveness. What they fail to mention, however, is that passive radar jamming units are only effective within about 100 feet from the speed gun.

Since most people are much farther away when their speeds are recorded, these models are just shy of useless. Illegal active devices are much more effective in preventing your speed from being detected; however, the result can easily be jail time and/or hefty fines, when the unit is discovered. Both active and passive radar detector jammer units can be purchased in today’’s market, especially online. Active jammers come with hefty price tags, sometimes exceeding $1,500.

So how are police fighting back against this technology? Many policemen and state patrol are now able to detect when radar jammers are being used, and are able to pull a driver over for this. Additionally, the speed guns used nowadays are extremely advanced and much more difficult to jam. For most, testing their unit’’s effectiveness by speeding past a state patrolman probably doesn”t seem like the wisest option.

Getting the Help of a GPS Fish Finder

June 15, 2008

By Phoenix Delray

The days of old school fishing no longer exists in the world today and now it has become all about having the latest and most innovative piece of technology to help you in your fishing endeavors. In the old days, people never thought about what technological gadgets they were going to need to bring on board with them to help catch fish. However, today just about anyone who fishes, whether infrequently or daily, has at least the basics. The basics include some type of GPS fish finder and/or chart plotter to assist in their journey.

For any sailor or fisherman, it is always still a good idea to have an updated paper version of a chart plotter on board, but it is difficult to keep up with this when there are so many choices of different GPS fish finders and other electronic navigation devices. There are two different ways that sailors can display electronic navigation charts; on waterproof chart plotters or on a personal laptop. Lately, it seems that the choice of methods is directly related to the size of boat they are traveling on and what length and types of trips they are taking. People who have boats that are smaller than fifty feet have been favoring the electronic chart plotters.

The sailors or seafarers who have larger crafts that provide them with more room and overall protection from the natural elements may choose to use a laptop. The way the charts on chart plotters work is they are created through a memory card that is inserted into a Global Positioning System unit. This allows them to have a clear view of where they are at the current moment and even more so, where they want to go and the best route to take to get there.

There are many varieties of these electronic chart plotters to choose from so it is important to know what you are looking for before setting out on your search. Almost all of these products provide premium charts that display real pictures with three dimensional and satellite images. Some of the fancier, high end systems are equipped with touch screens as opposed to buttons to make it easier and more efficient to use. Ultimately, it does not matter which model you choose, but it is important to figure out which device you need. Chart plotters are a great idea for anyone who travels on a boat, but the package is really not complete without a GPS fish finder. A GPS fish finder is guaranteed to revolutionize your approach to fishing and improve the sport as a whole.

Marine GPS units are the latest type of technology for any level seafarer. These devices are based on the Global Positioning System and they revolve around a constellation of satellites that orbit the earth two times everyday and by doing so, they transmit the exact time and position of a given thing. Marine GPS units are essential for anyone who travels on the water, large or small.

Marine GPS units work well in any type of body of water, whether it is an ocean, a sea, a lake or even a pond. Not everyone owns a twelve foot yacht and travels the big seas all year round; some people just enjoying fishing in their local body of water when they have the time off from work. Marine GPS units are great because they tell the user so many different things that will help them on their trip. If you are someone who has a boat that you use to travel all over the world and look at it as an exploration tool, then you are someone who must have a Marine GPS. Unless you are incredibly experienced on the open seas, then I am sure you have encountered some problems with your navigation.

Before these devices, if you were lost at sea the best thing you could do was to radio in the coast guard or get help from another seafarer. Now, you have the luxury of being able to purchase a personal Marine GPS unit that will guide you out of any troubled situation. This Global Positioning System tracks your trip and stores tons of pertinent information in its database. At any time, you can find out the exact coordinates of where you originated from, where you are now, where your destination is and how to get there. Gone are the days of feeling helpless and stranded; this is the new wave of technology and as a sea traveler you should not miss out.

Another great feature that is on most Marine GPS units is the helpful fish finder. If you are someone who goes out on a boat a lot, then you probably already know about the Marine GPS, but you may not know about all of its unique features. The fish finder allows you to track where the highly populated areas of fish are, what the depth is and almost precise locations. This is unlike anything else and if you are a fishing enthusiast, then I am sure you can understand. So, say goodbye to the long days of fishing with no bite and say hello to your new fishing extravaganza.

The Secret Behind Capturing Professional Photographs

June 14, 2008

By Roberto Sedycias

Are you an amateur photographer and keen on knowing the secret of capturing flawless pictures like a professional photographer?

If you are passionate about photography and enthusiastic about using your digital camera with optimum effect, then read on. In this age of cutting-edge technology, digital cameras have gained an exceptional foothold in the international gadget market.

Today, we can find digital cameras almost in every hand. However, it is not a digital camera that necessarily ensures a brilliant photograph. The person who operates the digital camera is largely responsible for the outcome. Whether you are a newbie or a seasoned photographer, the following tips can help you improve your photography skills on a digital camera.

There are primarily two important aspects to taking good photographs with a digital camera such as proper exposure and sharp focus, although both of them are closely related to each other. Hence, most of the modern digital cameras have the automatic feature to facilitate a good photography output. However, sometimes the auto exposure technology fails to read the scene correctly leading to wrong exposure and bad photograph. Therefore, it is important for you to learn how to use the exposure compensation feature of digital cameras.

The shutter speed of your digital camera greatly affects its output. Shutter speed of a digital camera essentially means how long the shutter stays open which is usually expressed in fraction of a second such as 1/30th or 1/400th. Typically, the slower the shutter speed, the higher the chances of the picture becoming blurred.

So, if you have set your digital camera in the automatic mode, make sure the shutter speed is 1/125th. This is because it`s tough to expect a good picture with slower shutter speed. Conversely, if you want to take photograph of a moving object, the shutter speed of your digital camera needs to be set at 1/400th to nullify the motion. Besides, if the automatic mode of your digital camera doesn`t show a shutter speed which is quick enough, you should switch it to shutter priority to manual.

There is another critical aspect to taking good pictures with you digital camera, i.e., aperture setting. Explained in a layman term, it basically means how wide the shutter opens when you take a photograph. There is a trade-off between shutter speed and aperture setting of a digital camera.

For instance, if you increase the shutter speed to get avoid the blurring effect in your pictures, the shutter should open wide enough to allow enough light. This could considerably affect the results. Hence, if you want to maximize the depth of the field, take the pictures with a slower shutter speed. If your purpose is to shoot objects that are not moving, you should set a small aperture. Incase, you are shooting a moving object, choose higher speed.

If you are wondering what the secret behind some professional nature and landscape photographs is, then you will be surprised to know that they are taken on a tripod to minimize the camera movements. Shooting under inadequate light condition requires slow shutter speed and use of a tripod. Also you can use a tripod with a small aperture and slow shutter speed to shoot better photographs on a sunny day.

Another secret to capturing magical photographs with you digital cameras lies in following your object. Try planting your feet firmly and bracing your arms strongly against your sides. Then follow the moving object by slowly turning your body. This can dramatically improve the performance of the pictures although the background might get a bit blurred.

Capturing good photographs with your digital camera requires experience and creative imagination. However you should learn the tricks of using all the features of your digital camera to produce astonishing pictures. After all, a digital camera is only as good as the pictures that you capture. Hence, know your camera inside out.

Picking a Good Satellite TV Service

June 14, 2008

By Jeff Buckley

Right now in America there are two satellite TV companies battling each other for your hard earned cash. Those players are Dish Network and DirecTV. While the pay television market is becoming saturated, these companies continue to expand their customer base and pull in more subscribers year in and year out.

While sales have decreased a little for Dish Network, DirecTV is still on a roll. Most customers will not discern any great difference between the tow, as the both offer the consumer a huge variety as far as channels, programming and equipment. This no doubt makes it fairly quick and easy to get exactly what you want for your television.

Some complain that with so many choices, it gets confusing, the best advice is to simply decide what you want first, then go for the package that works best for your family. Some folks are always looking at the bottom line, because everyone want to save a buck, but wasting a ton of time researching every little detail isn”t really worth it. The equipment and channel choices do not vary that much when it comes to satellite TV.

For most customers, any package from Dish Network or DirecTV will fit the bill, as each company offers the consumer a good value for the dollar, and the ability to customize the package to your liking. I recommend a quick research project, putting Dish Network and DirecTV side by side. You will quickly discern that each satellite television provider can offer you all digital picture and sound. This is great for HDTV because it will deliver a crystal clear picture and great sound quality on that new television. Satellite television companies have to be offering products that compete well with cable TV companies.

They continue to excel in this area, as million of customers stick with satellite, and don”t even consider cable TV anymore. Each satellite company has more than 13 million customers, with another million or so signing up each year. After counting the cost of service, make sure you have any extra must haves covered. Additional programming options are available, such as movie channels, sports packages, and even XM or Sirius radio programming. Both of the satellite providers also offer local channel programming, though there may be an extra charge.

Some foreign language packages have also started to emerge, whether it is Spanish, Chinese, German or French. These packages are a good way for some to keep in touch with what is going on back home. Most of these foreign language packages require an English programming subscription as well.

No matter which provider you choose, one last thing to check is whether they have local HD channel availability. While local HD delivery is expanding, it is not available in all markets yet.

June 13, 2008

By Phoenix Delray

Todays handheld GPS units can mean the difference between trekking aimlessly through the woods, hopelessly lost, and finding your way to safety and once again surviving the great outdoors. Though, in todays society, its not all to uncommon for people to lose their way downtown or in the neighboring town. Its not just the wilderness. How many times have you found yourself late to a meeting because you missed your turn or drove by your exit?

Thus, handheld GPS units and Auto GPS systems have come into our lives. With the range in brands, styles and sizes, the application of the handheld GPS units have increased dramatically. Now, these units have become increasingly smaller and are even pocket sized. Yet, with the same great technology that can show the owner as to where they are in within the world simply by pressing a button.

The handheld GPS units locate the owner with a special operation tool that adds the position based on elevation with other factors to come up with a rounded area estimate that designates the users position in the world. Hopefully, by knowing their location, the owner can find their way out of the woods or the city. Where ever they may happen to be lost.

The biggest advantage of the handheld GPS units, besides that it helps you find your position, is its size. So, instead of trying to find lots of space for your large GPS gadget, you can simply toss the handheld GPS units in your pocket or clip it to your belt until, god forbid, it is needed again.

With any luck, you wont need your handheld GPS units and you may just be able enjoy your trip, comfortable with the fact that, should you need it, the GPS is there. Like a good Boy Scout, you will be ready for anything thanks to your handheld GPS units on hand.

Using the handheld GPS units is easy, too. With clear instructions and tips available on the screens display, the owner can learn to use the unit in a hands on way. On some models, popular in the Auto GPS systems, the units even come with an attractive voice sampler that can provide directions audibly instead of just on the display.

This, of course, is a great way to find your position with help from a friendly voice guiding you. The voices from the GPS unit can certainly help to give comfort in otherwise stressful times. So, it seems that using the handheld GPS units is a great way to aid in finding your position and an awesome way to save the owner from the potential disaster of being utterly lost.

Erase Late From Your Vocab With An Auto GPS System

June 13, 2008

By Phoenix Delray

There is nothing more frustrating then watching your exit speeding by while you curse yourself for not paying attention. Or driving in circles trying to find the worlds best coffee shop and no others will do because your co workers decided it was your turn to buy. Or even abandoning your car to trek down the side of the highway with an empty gas can because, you know, you really thought that there was a gas station a little bit closer. I mean, lets face it, we all have our own examples of frustration because we didnt know where we are, or how far until the next exit. We all have reasons why we should own an Auto GPS system, but have we really put the thought into it?

Lets be honest. There is so many models and styles and brands and prices and well, you get the idea. There is so much to choose from when considering an Auto GPS system that it can make your head spin. Luckily for you, weve done all the head spinning for you and put together some key features you do not want to miss when making your final purchase on an Auto GPS system.

First consideration in purchasing an Auto GPS system is the price point versus features. The price can change considerably depending on what is offered with your GPS system and more so, can change considerably between stores. Now, we know it doesnt take a scientist to tell you to try and save money thats a given for most. We want to bring to your attention the finer details. Is the functionality of this new Auto GPS system going to be utilized? Is it worth spending more money on a feature that isnt supported in your area or by your car? Or would it take additional fees for this specific unit to provide the functionality listed on the box? For example, do you need a membership to an Auto club or have to subscribe to a service to see traffic reports?

Secondly, make sure to weigh the features you want against what the Auto GPS system is offering. If you need voice prompted directions or want the GPS system hooked up to your vehicles speakers, dont assume that those features are always standard. Are you looking to sync this Auto GPS system with other devices, can you add support for other regions or countries? The biggest factor should be the room the device has left for growth. How long will this GPS system last before it is considered obsolete?

With those thoughts in mind, it should make searching for a perfect Auto GPS system a little easier and more bareable. More importantly, these tips should also help reduce the headaches of being lost, missing your exit, or running out of gas. Good luck!
