Victims suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) or TBI caused by a stroke-induced brain injury were recently introduced to new technology enabling improvements of motor and physical skills among victims. Several companies have made advances in technology allowing victims to learn to reuse limbs paralyzed by TBI and stroke-induced TBI as well as to assist in stimulating nerves and muscles.
According to Bioness, manufacturers of the technology units known as NESS, the wearable technology can be worn in areas where extreme damage has been done to the muscles and nerves due to TBI. The technology uses mild electronic shocks to stimulate the muscles and nerves of the afflicted area, thus allowing movement.
The products have been implemented in several hospitals, including Sierra Providence Physical Rehabilitation Hospital in El Paso, Texas, for individuals suffering from brain injuries that may need short- and long-term assistance from their TBI injury.
Some of the technology in existence available to aid victims includes hand and foot rehabilitation devices. The hand rehabilitation technology is a plastic cuff molded around the hand, wrist and forearm and consists of six electrodes that transmit electronic impulses to stimulate nerves and muscles. The stimulation causes the muscles to become less stiff while also increasing circulation and strength of the injured area.
The hand rehabilitation device is attached to a small computer that, according to news reports, is similar to a handheld gaming gadget. The gadget is used to control electric shocks.
The foot cuff wraps around the leg and knee and is ideal for victims of TBI who suffer from what is known as foot drop, otherwise described as when an individual cannot walk correctly or lift their foot. The cuff, also attached to a game-like gadget uses sensors that detect the range of motion for a foot and heel to hitting the ground. Through nerve stimulation, the cuff allows a victim to control their foot mobility.
Additionally, the Journal of Biological Engineering recently published a study from researchers at Purdue University who found that patients being treated with an injectable simple polymer, polyethylene glycol (PEG), into the blood stream immediately following a head trauma had comparative less damage than compared to those that were delayed in receiving the polymer or who did not receive the polymer at all.
Technology Assists TBI Victims
As TBI becomes an ever-increasing technology among Americans, the technology has grown to encompass or assist the wide-range of TBI side effects. Not only are manufacturers looking at developing technology to assist victims of TBI, but scientists also continue to work on alternative treatments including the most recent technology that is being led by Nicholas Schiff of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. Weill and his colleagues are studying the effects of electrically stimulating parts of the brain to improve TBI after-effects.
The study found that patients of TBI who have seriously debilitating side effects have a surprising level of brain activity and that if the victim’’s neural circuits are left intact, the brain can benefit and become active with stimulation.
Scientists used a procedure known as deep brain stimulation, in which electrodes are surgically implanted into the effected area of the brain. These electrodes are also connected to a pacemaker implanted in the chest. The device can be turned on or off, but once the device was turned on in many of their patients, arousal of cells occurred, and, with time, a patient’’s behaviors and abilities improved gradually.
Causes of TBI
While researchers, scientists and manufacturers continue to make strides with technological devices to assist brain injury victims there are still approximately 1.4 million victims of TBI a year, with 235,000 of those affected with TBI being hospitalized, 1.1 million individuals being treated and released, and approximately 50,000 TBI-related deaths per year. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 5.3 million Americans suffer from long-term TBI after affects and that the medical costs associated with TBI range have been speculated to be around $60 billion.
There are numerous ways in which an individual can sustain a brain injury including but there are four accidents that make up most of these injuries:
* Falls, accounting for 28 percent of TBI accidents
* Automobile and traffic accidents are responsible for 20 percent of brain injury accidents.
* Nineteen percent are caused by being stuck by or against something
* Assaults account for 11 percent of brain injuries among individuals.
Those who have been injured in a TBI accident should not only seek medical attention immediately but should also consider developing brain injury litigation. Often times, expenses of medical bills associated with treating a brain injury can be far too costly for an average individual to pay for, which is why it is a necessity to speak with a TBI lawyer. A redundant transmitter can help in the reduction of those possible sound dropouts. A wireless system is not completely without wires. They need external power source for amplification.
RF or Radio Frequency, on the other hand, uses radio waves which can pass trough solids as well as other physical obstructions. The RF technology uses better set of transmitters and receivers to negate the problems of signal interference.
RF signal uses radio waves; so do radio, microwave oven, computers and some other electrical appliances. A slight interference problem still remains though.
Although the performance element of the wireless speakers is somewhat suspect, one of the main reasons for using them is their ready usability. Unpack them from the bag and turn on the speakers. It is done. Also drilling holes in the wall or putting wires under the carpet is also not there if you go for the wireless version of the speakers. So many people will automatically go for them when they consider the ease with which they are installed.

Your family is the most important thing to you, and yet when you get out on the road, something happens. You are late, or lost, or both, and you just cant seem to find your way back, so the bickering begins. It has happened to almost every family, but the auto GPS unit has put a stop to this time honored tradition of arguing over who will or will not ask for directions.
The setup is so common that it is a staple of the standup comedy routine. The man refuses to ask for directions. The woman begs him. They fight. This scenario simply does not happen when there is a soothing voice telling the driver to turn at the next intersection, or to prepare to exit the highway shortly. That extra passenger in the car may be electronic, but he/she/it goes a long way toward keeping the peace.
This is true for family road trips as well. For once, the auto GPS unit is doing the navigating for you, and the family is free to talk, catch up on each others lives, and play games with one another rather than have their faces buried in a map trying to figure out where they are. More than one trip has been ruined by a fight that began with accusations about who told who to turn where, and became an argument about something else entirely. How often have you heard someone ask why the family even went on vacation at all, if they were not going to have any fun?
Having a GPS is akin to having a servant who takes care of the one thing that bothers you most about driving (other than waiting in traffic, of course). Not knowing where you are or not knowing how to get where you need to be.
All this stress being lifted from the driver and the navigator has a tangible effect on the success of the family vacation, and on the relationships between driver and passengers even on short trips. The simple fact of knowing where you are can be an amazing shot of relaxation right during the pressures associated with trying to operate a motor vehicle.

I first heard of the word RJ45 and thought of a fighter plane! People who are not so tech-savvy, like myself, will not know that this piece of equipment is actually one of the most important piece of equipment one can use for networking and for telecommunication. The rj45 is a popular choice, however it is available in different configurations. Such configurations can include the RJ11 and RJ14, however, these are mainly used in the U.S. The RJ 45 is used also used in UK and is one of the standard physical interfaces used for telecommunication.
The RJ abbreviation in RJ45 stands for registered jack, this looks like a regular phone lead and is commonly used for connecting telephones in or computers for various networking facilities. As thrilling as the RJ45 sounds, it is actually one of the most important equipments around and plenty of people use it without even knowing it. To a layman the RJ connectors look the same - simple plugs that look like something you would connect into a telephone jack.
Different variations of the registered jack make a difference in the way they connect up. So even if you think they all look the same, you are in fact very wrong. The RJ11 has a two-wire connection, whereas the RJ14 has a four-wire configuration and the RJ25 uses a full six-wire configuration. The RJ45 can be connected onto a number of different cables. These are put to use mostly for Ethernet connection, which is a network of a connection between numerous computers and allows them to communicate with each other.
As the RJ45 is a versatile connector, it can fit onto different types of cables of different categories. The first category, category four, refers to how it can be connected using a four-wire connection. This works in a similar sort of way as it would on the category six cable, which connects to a six-wire connection. The category six-wire connection is good for transferring information across, however only four of the wire connection is used for the transfer. Manufacturers make these wires so that when connection speed increases and changes develop in technology, they already have a product that is fully functional and up to speed.
This works well using the opposite method, in that some cables are able to compress the data into the smallest space possible. Without hindering the speed of the speed of the data transfer, which makes it one of the most efficient data transferring cables around.
