Is it a Cell Phone or a Mobile Phone?

May 31, 2008

By Bruce Lipski

In the last 25 years, the cell phone has gone from being an business tool to a common place personal communications device used by almost everyone. Most countries call it a “mobile phone” but in the United States it is more generally known as a “cell phone”. In some parts of the world there are now more cell phones than there are land line phones and this trend is most certainly going to continue.

In advanced markets such as Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Israel, Singapore and many others, is is very common for young children to have cell phones. Children as young as 6 to 7 might have a cell phone account opened in their name as the parents see the mobile phone as a safety device that they can use to keep track of their children. Most of those children will be getting their parents older used phone but in Japan, companies are already specifically targeting the young children’’s mobile phone market.

The United States is well behind the rest of the world in most aspects of the cell phone industry. Only in the last few years has a real drop in land line phones as people switch to mobile phones been evident. A far fewer percentage of children have cell phone in the U.S. than they do in many parts of the rest of the world. The ones who do have one though, see them as a fashion accessory and that has given a rise to the ring tone industry and other industries catering to making the mobile phone look cool. If you are young, not only do you have to have a cell phone but you have to have a cool case and ringtones to establish your identity.

There are different rules of etiquette in each country. In America, it is common place to hear people almost anywhere talking on a cell phone. Movie theaters and libraries may be restricted but people commonly use their cell phones in trains, busses, airports, shopping malls and many other common gathering places. Contrasting this is Japan where a cell phone ring will almost never be heard and people are extremely courteous. Cell phones are not used in trains and other places where they may bother others and it is considered rude to use them. To get around this, texting via their cell phones is the preferred method of communication in Japan.

Cold Case - Phoenix And The Outlook For Life On Mars

May 30, 2008

By Ian Maclean

The Phoenix Mars Polar Lander is slated to land on Mars” north pole on May 25th - very soon now! Phoenix is intended to look for signs of microbial life, and there’’s a case that evidence may be found on Mars.

The first piece of evidence is purported microfossils found in an Antarctic meteorite in 1997 - this Shergottic meteorite ALH84001, estimated to be 4.5 billion years old, is still the subject of some controversy. There are some who say that the micro structures are evidence of biotic contamination from its long tenure on Earth, others maintain hope that it’’s evidence of a link to life on the Mars.

Martian life has a long held a fascination for astronomers - for one, it’’s a bright object in the sky, and for two, after the development of the telescope in the 1600s, it showed the most obvious color changes of any object in the sky. From Schiapiarelli to Lowell to Wells, the prospect of Martian life has held the imagination, even as the scientific evidence mounted that such life would be nothing at all like we”d expect.

The case for life on Mars is reinforced by the exposure of bacteria on Lunar missions - samples went out, and came back, and were able to survive the harsh Solar and Van Allen radiation belts - even some of the plasma and thermal changes of reentry through the Earth’’s atmosphere. So life is remarkably hardy and capable of surviving in the vicious environment of space. Achaeobacteria and tube worms living on volcanic vents show that life can survive and thrive wherever there’’s a source of energy to exploit, even down in the depths of the ocean where sunlight isn”t even a memory.

However, the question of life on Mars has a few more complications. For one, it’’s a cold case -whether there was life in the past, Mars” surface conditions have changed over the last 5 billion years. There are definite epochs in Martian geology (called areology), where Mars speculation shows Mars having a thicker atmosphere than now, and receding (and advancing) surface water levels. Mars” current climate cannot support liquid water on the surface - the temperature is too low, and the atmospheric pressure is too low; if you took a tray of ice cubes out on the surface, they”d slowly evaporate by sublimation, the way dry ice does on Earth.

What caused these changes in Martian climate? Plate tectonics, or rather, the lack of them. Earth’’s biosphere is driven in large part by plate tectonics, which serve to bury carbon (in the form of limestone) caused by sedimentation. The driving force on plate tectonics is the decay of radioactive elements in the Earth’’s core.

Venus also shows evidence of having had plate tectonics in the past; its plate tectonics appear to have stopped due to the lack of water in the subsurface crust - the water in the oceans is far from being the majority of it on the planet; most of the rest is seepage down into the Earth’’s mantle, where it acts as a lubricant.

On Mars, due to short range radio surveys by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we now show that Mars” crust isn”t as flexible as Earth’’s - it’’s not being pressed down as much as it should be by the mass of the Martian polar ice cap. This is indicative that Mars is tectonically dormant.

Why does tectonic dormancy matter for the case for life on Mars? Tectonic activity is the likely driving energy source for any Martian microbes out there, and it’’s the only candidate presently known to make long standing seeps of liquid water, which is necessary for life as we know it.

Phoenix will be landing at the Martian north pole to give us some answers - but even if it finds nothing, there’’s no reason to give up hope. Mars has a surface area equal to all of Earth’’s dry land put together. Phoenix will only be able to sample an area comparable to a ring of soil around an office cubical.

Phoenix” other mission profile is to give climate data on Martian weather patterns and observational data on the polar winter, and it’’s slated to provide data for at least six months, with optional extensions for years. (The Spirit and Opportunity rovers are now approaching the fourth anniversary of the beginning of their 90 day survey…)

Phoenix live commentary from NASA begins at at 3:30 pm USA Pacific time on the 25th as the craft prepares for its decent into the Martian atmosphere, or about 9:30 on the morning of the 26th for Eastern Australia.

The Pros and Cons of the Apple iPhone

May 29, 2008

By Gloria Gangi

Thinking of buying the Apple iPhone but not sure if you should. Should you wait for something better to hit the market? There are some pros and cons to this new and extraordinary gadget that should be considered before purchasing it.

Why you should not buy the iPhone

The iPhone does have its flaws and disadvantages like many modern electrical devices. There are many articles on the internet giving copious amount of advice on why you should not buy the iPhone and as many outlining their faults. But here I will summaries some of the more important drawbacks the phone has.
The game of Sudoku can be played by children and adults as the rules are simple to learn.
Sudoku does not require calculation or mathematical skill. It uses the simple rule of logic and deduction.

1. In the USA you have to subscribe to a 2 year plan with AT&T at a price in which they decide and you may not like.
2. To activate the phone on another network outside the USA could possibly cause damage to the phone.
3. Apple uses 2.5g edge network so web browsing can be extremely slow.
4. Apple iPhone does not support flash so you will not be able to use some sites.
5. There is a lack of applications and not all third party applications are supported by the iPhone .The only way you can install the applications is by hacking the phone.

Why you should by the iPhone

1. You can browse the web comfortably
2. Listen to music, it is said that the iPhone is the best for listening to tunes. Plus it will work with the hundreds of iPod speakers and other accessories.
3. Watch videos, or movies
4. Use it as a phone and the iPhone has built-in WiFi and Bluetooth
5. Some people believe that the phone is as good as having a laptop sidestepping the problem of lack of applications by unlocking the phone and placing hacked files on there
6. It is extremely hip and trendy making you the envy of all your friends. This phone has a large, beautiful, and bright screen, which is all the more surprising since it’’s a touch-screen, which is usually less vivid. The screen measures 3.5 inches across, bigger than just about anything made for the hand. The page orientation changes when the iPhone is tipped on its side, allowing you to see Web sites, videos, maps and photos in landscape mode. Multi-touch is a fantastic feature for zooming in and out and panning.
7. With the coming release of the iPhone 3 g process are bound to drop.
8. The phone comes with all the elements of a smart phone, including an address book, calendar, maps, notes, and, of course, E-mail.

With a price drop on the way why not consider the Apple iPhone for your next mobile purchase.

Looking Backward Illuminates How to Make Improvements in the Present and Future

May 29, 2008

By Donald Mitchell

The distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.

–Albert Einstein

I have always been fascinated with the past. As a youngster, the older a story, myth, or legend was, the better I liked it. By quite a young age, David, Icarus, and Ulysses seemed quite real to me.

That interest soon led me into reading histories as well. The battle of Thermopylae (where in 480 BC the Spartan-led Greeks heroically held a narrow mountain pass to block the passage of the Persian army under Xerxes until betrayed by a traitor) seemed as immediate to me as D-Day (the Allied invasion of Normandy in France to establish a Western front against Germany during World War II) did to people who were alive in 1944.

By the time I had finished the sixth grade, I had read all of the standard history texts used through the end of high school. Branching out, I also began to read biographies and autobiographies to meet other prominent figures from the past and bring them into my present for consideration.

By the time I finished high school, I knew that I wanted to study history in college. That was a happy choice because Harvard University, where I would be an undergraduate, was unusually well stocked with great historians.

Quickly, my tutors there taught me to disregard secondary texts and to focus on original documents written by contemporaries who had participated in or observed the events. Old newspapers, diaries, pamphlets, and written versions of oral histories became my stalking grounds.

From this experience with the raw material of history, I began to form a different impression of how improvements occur than what had been described to me by books and teachers. I had been told that with rare exceptions, making progress was continual and ever upward. In this view, new knowledge was highly sought after by most and quickly appreciated.

By studying day-to-day records of those who first imagined improvements, I found instead that many of the great advances in knowledge were widely ignored or long delayed in implementation. For example, Leonardo da Vinci’’s notebooks contained many practical ideas that lay fallow for centuries before the ideas became everyday realities.

The Romans knew how to make mortar for their roads that lasted for centuries by mixing in fine pumice emitted from Mount Etna while modern roads made with coarser materials crumble after a few seasons. During the Middle Ages in Europe, much classical learning was all but eradicated. Centuries passed before the Renaissance revived interest in and awareness of this earlier knowledge.

The Chinese became insular and lost their command of the seas after having once had the world’’s most advanced navy. The highly energetic Japanese similarly rested in suspended animation when it came to most improvements until forcibly exposed to the Industrial Revolution by Admiral Perry’’s gunboats. Until recently, modern Egyptians had no more idea of how their ancestors constructed the pyramids than they did how to clone camels.

Questioning thinkers have always tested the opportunity to improve on what was previously known, but those quests were hobbled because access to what had been known earlier was usually quite limited. Expand awareness of the best of earlier knowledge, and you could greatly expand potential to improve — that much seemed obvious. The lack of access is worsened by so much knowledge existing in secret or near-secret conditions.

Paradoxically, some advances were once so well established that no one bothered to document them, such as the use of some rare herbs to treat medical problems. In addition, knowledge (or what seemed to pass for knowledge) was expanding much faster than any individual could absorb in more than a limited area.

To me, it seemed like there was one hope: Gather up the undeveloped ideas of people like Leonardo da Vinci and get busy working on them. But don”t wait several hundred years to get started. Work on the most promising undeveloped ideas right after they are conceived. That’’s the first lesson of how to accelerate improvements.

Information on Cell Phones

May 26, 2008

By Rob Lamper

Sometimes we delay charging as we are too busy and this often means the phone fails but leaving recharging like this isn”t a good idea. If you do not want to replace your cell phone battery early then you must not continue leaving the recharge cycle until the last minute.

There are several ways to prolong the life of your cell phone battery; Keep your back light off unless you know for sure you”ll need it and whilst this might be annoying at first it will save battery life. When the phone is operational, it is constantly searching for a signal which is ok when there is good signal strength but if this is lost, it still tries to find a signal using more power and draining the cell phone battery in the process; the same way that long conversations do. Today’’s cell phones have many more functions and if you spend a great deal of time surfing the Internet or listening to music, the battery deplete earlier than it should, possibly just when you need to use to speak to someone.

One way that young people get caught out is with the many things they can now download onto their phones which are often chargeable even if this is not made clear at the time of purchase. If you purchase one for your child, find out if you can block these features or find out if there’’s a way that you as a parent can order features, but your child cannot.

People that use a cell phone regularly, arrange for a monthly plan, this is a contract over 12 or 24 months but if the phone is not going to be used regularly, a pay-per use option is probably preferable. The process for each contract will differ greatly but arranging a pay-per use contract for a regular phone user is probably not the best option to have financially speaking. Consider the features you want, as long-term plans often have more features for less money or even as a bonus, at no charge; so ask if all your features, such as caller ID, will work when roaming.

Pay attention to any hidden charges like penalties for early termination of the contract as some contracts can be costly to get out of. Steer clear of a contract that does not supply the phone with an insurance warranty as you could be liable for any costs if it were stolen or inadvertently damaged.

You also want to make sure that the parts and accessories are easily obtained from any regular cell phone store, even if you purchase the phone from an Internet based company.

The Benefits of Having a Vacuum Food Sealer

May 26, 2008

By Victor Epand

There are many ways that you can keep your food tasting great. You just have to know how to do it and one of those ways is by using a vacuum food sealer. What is a vacuum food sealer? How can it help me?

Vacuum food sealers are available to you from many different places. You may not know what they are, even though you really should. Vacuum sealers are small portable devices that pretty much suck out the air that may be in your food storage bag with your food. This helps your food in many different ways, but how?

If you find that you have a lot of problems with your food staying good, then you may decide that a vacuum food sealer is something that is right for you. These food sealers are great with helping you to keep your food good and edible longer than before you used a vacuum system. The system helps to keep the air that makes the food get old and not let you keep it as long, out of your food bag so that the food is good and lasts longer for you.

Another good reason to get a vacuum sealer, is to keep your frozen foods from getting frostbite. You may notice that the foods that you put into your freezer are getting covered in frost and it makes them hard to eat later on. Having a food vacuum system helps to stop this from happening to your food. You just hook it up to your included vacuum bags before you stick the food in the freezer and let the vacuum take out all the extra air and create a good closer that air will not be able to get into before you put it in the freezer.

There are many benefits to a vacuum food sealer if you are willing to look into it. You may find that you are saving money on your food bill because the food that you have stays good longer. You may also notice that your food tastes better than it did before you had the vacuum system. You can have great tasting food and have it longer than you thought you would be able to and you may find that you really can”t live without it and don”t know how you ever did before you had it in the first place.

Frame Sliders And What They Can Do For You

May 25, 2008

By Victor Epand

What the heck are frame sliders? If you”re not a motorcycle rider, you probably have no idea what these things really are. And if are a motorcycle rider, chances are that you haven”t bothered to know what they are!

Frame sliders are parts that are attached to your motorcycle and which protect it in the case of an accident. You may think that you don”t need this kind of motorcycle accessory but they really keep your bike safe. When you have an accident and you are using one of these, you won”t see as much damage as when you are not using this product on your motorcycle.

These are really great things that can be used on your sport bike for its protection. These sliders help to protect the vital parts of the motorcycle and save you from having to pay large sums of money in the case of an accident. This can be its own reward as well.

These are not used with cruise bikes at this time. You normally wouldn”t put these on this kind of motorcycle, but these are one of the best pieces of motorcycle gear that you can buy for your bike.

When you look at these sliders, you should make sure that you are getting the right one for your motorcycle and that you won”t have any problems with your motorcycle in case you have an accident with it. Some of these frame sliders will protect more of the important parts of the bike than others. That’’s why you need to make sure that you have picked the right type and the right size for your frame slider in the end.

These sliders come in many colors that will also style up your motorcycle and make it look really good going down the road, if anyone will be able to see it in the streak of colors when you go at a great speed.

Take some time and look at this important motorcycle gear add on before taking the decision to by one. You want to find some that look good but also work well with your bike. This device is primarily for the protection of the vital parts on your motorcycle. You may think that it’’s easy to find one that will work, but you also want to find one that looks good with your individual style. So get out there and ride and have a safe and fun time.

Will A Solar Hot Tub Save You Money?

May 25, 2008

By Bruce Lipski

Most people buy their hot tubs and expect to keep and use them for many years. For this reason, it is best to try to purchase as much hot tub as you can afford. If you buy a cheap one and then replace it in 2 or 3 years, it would have been cheaper to buy a more expensive one from the start. You might only buy one hot tub in your lifetime so it is best to save up and get the most you can afford.

The main reason to buy a solar operated hot tub is to save money on electricity. If you are worried about the added electricity costs of purchasing a regular hot tub then maybe you should consider a solar powered hot tub. By purchasing a solar hot tub, you will be able to save in electricity for years to come. Solar powered hot tubs are not cheap, however, and you may be spending more money up front than you would if you bought a conventional hot tub. But in the long run they will end up being cheaper when you figure in your savings on electricity. The sun is a free resource of energy and it is a good idea to take advantage of it if you live in a sunny environment.

How much you save on electricity depends on the type of unit you buy. Over time you will be able to save money on energy, however, and that should more than make up for the up front cost. You should plan on keeping and using your hot tub for a least 5 years before you can expect to make up in electricity savings what you spent up front to get the more expensive solar operated hot tub.

Using the sun and wind for energy sources is becoming more popular every day as people become increasingly concerned about the environment. Solar energy is there for the taking and the only obstacle is how to harness it. It is because this technology is not perfected and streamlined that a solar hot tub will cost more than a regular one. Someday, when future advancements have been made, using the sun for energy may be more commonplace. Until then though, you will have to pay a premium for solar energy.

Solar powered hot tubs are made very well and should last a lifetime with the proper care. You must be sure to maintain them regularly and treat them as an investment. If you do this though, you will have a lifetime of happy memories with your very cool solar operated hot tub and you will undoubtedly be the envy of the block.

No More Fish Tales With A GPS Fish Finder On Board

May 24, 2008

By Phoenix Delray

Whether fishing in a small lake or in the depths of the ocean, you may want to look into purchasing a tool that is used by fisherman all over the world. The GPS Fish Finder will be sure to make your next fishing trip a huge success. Though they can be a little costly, you may determine that the amount of man hours that you spend seeking out that great catch has been greatly lessened.

There is something to be said for an instrument that can detect an entire realm of underwater creatures. You will find that there is a wide array of fish finders to choose from. You will find everything from very basic units for the weekend fisherman, to very involved full color display units that are more geared toward the professional fisherman.

There are several components that lend themselves to the make up of a GPS fish finder. The mounting bracket, display screen and transducer create your modern day fish finder, but how does it know how to find the fish? Well, you see, the transducer emits a beam of light (similar to that of a flashlight). As the beam moves further and further away from the transducer it gets wider and wider.

When it hits a target (a fish) the beam is reflected back to the transducer. Once that happens, the transducer then sends a signal to the GPS fish finders display, which computes the signals, distance, and shape. The distance and shape is then represented on the screen by a graphic display of either a Fish Symbol or an arch depending upon the brand and the model.

For most fish lovers, LCD finders meet and/or exceed their needs. CRT fish finders are great, but they are dependant on the use of an extreme amount of power. This can be a problem for small to medium sized boats that produce little to no electricity. The price of these fish finders really makes them more of a luxury than a necessity. LCD finders will aide in locating fish just as easily as the CRT option, minus the exorbitant cost.

Purchasing a GPS fish finder will surely prove to be an excellent investment when you catch your first swordfish, but be sure to do your research, as you would with any major purchase. You would not want to find yourself up the creek without a paddle…or a fish finder for that matter.
