What Does Gatso 2 Mean to UK Motorists

October 16, 2007

By Derek Both

So what is Gatso 2? Well, Gatso 2 is a network database that promises to be one of the most pervasive surveillance systems in modern times.

It may be defined as a national vehicle movement database that works round the clock. It is supposed to basically monitor and log everything on British roads and retain the data for a minimum of two years.

The system uses the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology and will be overseen from a control centre in Hendon, London. The Gatso 2 network extends, enhances and links already existing close circuit TVs, ANPR and speed-cam systems and databases.

If things go according to plan, the control center will go live before April of end next year. Estimates say that the system will process around 50 million number plates per day by the end of the year. To begin with, the ANPR system is on trial on the M42 motorway near Birmingham to enforce variable speed limits and then will be modified to handle more serious crimes.

So what does this mean for UK’’s motorists?

Untaxed, uninsured, stolen cars are running undetected on UK roads and the Gatso 2 intends to tackle this problem with an iron fist. The primary aim claimed for the system in the broad sense is denying criminals the use of public roads.

Reports say the ANPR cameras will be spaced by placing one every quarter of a mile on motorways. This is a clear indication that the Gatso 2 system will also be used to enforce speed limits, which will effectively drive the current generation Gatsos into extinction. Otherwise, using cameras to check a vehicle’’s tax and insurance status around every 15 seconds would be unrealistic.

One of the major payoffs from the government viewpoint is the creation of a comprehensive tax database. Also, as a result of the ANPR system being linked to a database of uninsured vehicles, new offences and police powers were announced by the Transport Secretary Alistair Darling.

So, now the previously harmless pastime of owning an uninsured vehicle but not driving it has been criminalized and it comes on top of the last breakthrough of keeping an untaxed vehicle in the garage and not driving it. In other words, even if you don”t actually commit the crime now, you have to pay the penalty.

With such a powerful surveillance system, vehicles can be followed remotely and a particular driver’’s past movements can be put together easily. The system also has the potential to recognize and store images of your face.

The biggest and by far most important advantage of this system is the role it has to play in the war against terror. The police can move quickly in response to tip-offs and sift computers, search homes and investigate an individuals circumstances and friends in search of evidence. At such a time, having this system as a back-up to let the police know where the person has been for the past two years is a big help to the investigation.

But, of course, if you haven”t done anything, you have nothing to fear. Happy driving!

Social Networking Sites Are Now A Must Have For Everyone

October 15, 2007

By Randy Zlobec

Social networking sites offer several benefits to members, many of which are just plain fun. There are so many things to do once you register that it can take some time to get a taste of everything. For those who have not discovered social networking sites, it is definitely time to crawl out from under your rock.

What is Social Networking?
At the basic level, social networking is simply the process of interacting with those in your social group, as well as meeting new people to include in that group. Before the internet became a standard feature in many households, your social group typically included people you met at school or work, and they generally lived nearby. You went out to clubs and restaurants, or maybe had a barbecue in the backyard whenever you wanted to interact with each other.

Not to say that backyard barbecues and nights on the town are a thing of the past, but social networking sites have certainly changed the concept of social networking. Your network is no longer limited to the people in your neighborhood, or even people in your country, and socializing does not require one dime to be spent on food or fuel.

How Does it Work?
While every social networking site has its own special attractions, there are some basic features that carry across them all. Once you register for an account with a social networking site, you receive your own personal page within the site. That page serves as your portal to the outside world.

Every social networking page contains basic profile information, but not every page is the same. Remember that your page is yours, and you are free to decorate and design in any way that makes you happy, as long as you stay within the guidelines established by the site. What you put on your profile page, from your picture to your graphics, is the first glimpse that other people have of you.

Of course, graphics and text are not the only enhancements that you can make to a page. You can add videos, upload photo albums, and add music to your profile page. There are even free music players that will let you add a variety of songs to the player and then place it on your page.

Social networking sites also let you start your own blog with no extra setup. Blogs are your chance to let the world read your innermost secrets and mindless ramblings. Blogs can also be a way to market your business, promote your favorite cause, or rant about things that make you want to pull your hair out. Think of it as an invisible, non-judgmental therapist that is available at all points in time.

So, What’’s the Point?
Social networking sites are just plain fun. Once you set up your profile page, other registered users from around the world can look at your profile and decide whether they want to get to know you. If they would like a chance to be friends, they simply request that you add them to your friends list. Of course, you can look at other people’’s profiles and make requests, too. Where else can you make friends with a sales executive in London while getting to know an unsigned blues band in Colorado?

There is an old saying, though, that goes, “Make new friends and keep the old” The same applies with social networking. You can look up a high school friend or a college roommate and have the chance to reconnect. Granted, you may quickly remember why you haven”t stayed in contact over the years, but you will at least have the chance to know how they are and where they have gone.

Social networking sites are also an excellent way to keep in touch with family members. While some families live in the same neighborhood, some do not even live in the same country. Profile pages can be used to give the latest news without a long-distance phone call, and family pictures can be shared without worrying about lost mail.

Some people even choose to use social networking sites to promote their businesses. Photos of the business or products allow people to see what is being offered, and the blog feature makes it possible to entice visitors to check out your business. This can be especially helpful for online businesses. Some marketers also use social networking sites to both increase their popularity and enhance their image as an expert in the field.

What’’s the Catch?
Social networking sites are not perfect. Because they are free of charge to registered users, site owners must find other ways to cover the cost of the site. Typically, keeping the site free means displaying advertisements to users. Unfortunately, the ads can easily become too much, and the site becomes cluttered with advertisements. When that happens, profile pages become less attractive, and users tend to be unhappy with the view.

Another downside to social networking sites is the risk to children. Not all adults on the internet are child-friendly, and there are predators on social networking sites just as they are anywhere else. Some social networking sites require users to be a minimum age, and they allow users to block their profiles from the general public. In order to see the profile, send a message, or leave a comment on a restricted profile, you must be added to their friends list. Other sites have begun allowing users to not only block a harassing member from their page, but also to report the offender.

All in all, social networking sites are a great way to meet new people, make friends, and connect with people from your past. You can build relationships, build a reputation, or build a business with the click of a button. If you haven”t made the leap into the future of social networking, you may want to get started.

Using Shredder Oil to Improve Performance and Prolong the Life of Your Shredder

October 15, 2007

By Jeff McRitchie

Just as you would never imagine (or shouldn”t) running your car for 20,000 miles without changing the oil, you shouldn”t imagine running your shredder without providing it with the oil that you need. In order to keep the cutting wheels and cutting head working efficiently, every shredder needs to be oiled on a consistent basis. Many people don”t realize that this is a necessity and thus don”t oil their shredders. However, these individuals probably don”t realize that their shredders aren”t operating at full capacity and will eventually need replacement if they don”t starting oiling them.

Every time you shred a piece of paper with your shredder it produces a small amount of paper dust. Over time, this paper dust collects on the shredding head and cutting wheels of your shredder making it much more difficult for your shredder to shred documents. If nothing is done about this problem, your shredder will have to work harder and harder to shred less and less paper. This leads to frustration on the part of the end user and if left unchecked will eventually result in the burnout of your shredder motor. However, consistent oiling of your shredder can easily fix this problem.

The good news is, shredding oil is very inexpensive and is simple to apply to your shredder. In fact, you don”t need to take your shredder apart to apply shredder oil. Simply take your bottle of shredder oil and apply several beads of oil to a piece of paper and feed it through the shredder. As the shredder shreds that piece of paper coated with shredder oil the shredder heads will be lubricated and the effects of the buildup of paper dust will be eliminated. Your shredder will be ready to run at full capacity and motor won”t have to work as hard to shred your documents.

It is recommended that you oil your cross cut or confetti cut shredder after every 1/2 hour of shredding. Strip cut shredders should be oiled after every 1 hour of shredding. It is also important to use a specially formulated, synthetic, non flammable shredder oil such as the GBC Shredmaster Shredder Oil or MBM Destroyit Shredder. These oils are specifically designed to help increase shredding performance and prolong the life of your shredder.

If you remember to regularly oil your shredder and are careful not to shred things that you aren”t supposed to most large shredders are designed to last for years or even decades. Happy oiling and happy shredding…

Green Laser Pointers Applications and Advantages

October 12, 2007

By Luigi Castagna

Green laser pointers were first commercially sold in the year 2000. They operate at the wavelength of 532 nm. Laser diodes of this wavelength are not available so the green light is obtained by the use of “DPSSFD” laser technology.

The process:-

A very high-powered Infrared laser diode working at 808 nm pumps a tiny block of Nd: YVO4 that generates light at 1,064 nm. This feeds a potassium titanyl phosphate intracavity frequency doubler crystal that produces green light of a visible 532 nm wavelength. High-powered green lasers use lithium triborate instead of KTP.

Features:-

An infrared filter, which is behind the mirror completely, removes the radiation of infrared spectrum from the output beam. In order to reduce cooling problems and prolong battery life, some green lasers operate in pulse or quasi-continuous-wave (QCW) mode. The Class III a laser product gives an output power of 5mw. This is the one of highest-powered street legal laser. Some green lasers even have an output of 10 mw, which has a range of 20,000 feet in darkness. Some even have a 3-second delay feature as these are high-powered lasers and can blind a person. Some laser point extenders are also available. They work by using lenses to minimize the beam spread of a laser. Its price starts from 55$. Majority of them have a life of around 3000 hours.

Applications:-

Green lasers can be used for a variety of roles. They can be used as pointing devices. The ability to form a continuous line in the dark is an added advantage; this has lead to its usage as rescue lights as it can be seen from miles away. It as been used for laser light shows. It is also used for sky gazing as a person can pinpoint a star by using the green laser. It can also be as laser pointers for guns, rifles. In the movie Alien vs. Predator it was used as a pointing device on some G36k carbines.

Advantages:-

The green laser has many advantages. It is fifty times brighter than a red laser because of which it can be seen from miles away, this helps in being rescued if a person is lost. It can also be used in high-tech weapons for aiming purposes. Because of its high range, Green laser pointers can be equipped in different kinds of weapons. High and low temperatures do not affect the performance of Green laser pointers so in case a person is lost in a desert, he can still use Green laser pointers to call for help, in other case, even if a person is lost some where in mountains all covered with ice, he can still use it.

Disadvantages:-

Due to its high power it can permanently damage a person’’s eye. As it can form a continuous line of light that might reveal a person’’s position so it cannot be used in stealthy operations or by SWAT.

Green laser is quite awesome but it should be used carefully.

Cell Phone Contract Deals And Technologies

October 11, 2007

By Roberto Sedycias

Gone are the days when people used to depend on the land phones to communicate their messages. Welcome to the age of cell phones where sending your message across to someone is just a click away. Cell phones, also known as mobile phones, have become all pervasive and fast emerging as a universal obsession. Contrary to the purpose behind of its invention, it has now become an in-thing in our society and is being largely seen as a sign of status.

Moreover, the application of cell phones are no longer confined to making calls and sending text messages (sms); they are being highly used as means of internet connectivity, shooting pictures and videos, listening to music, playing games, and global tracking system (GPS). Indeed, the ground-breaking inventions in the information technology have enabled and literally empowered the cell phone users to perform what was virtually inconceivable till the last decade.

In the last couple of years, the global mobile phone market has witnessed the emergence of some high-end and feature-filled cell phones with a price-tag attached to it which is beyond the reach and affordability of the average buyers.

The best thing about mobile phones is their innovation. Cell phones have been universally admired in the technology segment. Despite not being too old in innovation, these devices have been able to carve a niche in terms their high-efficiency. For instance, now most mobile phones can be found suitable for all sorts of digital requirement. This can be best explained by taking into account the recently launched PDA handsets which allow their customers to stay connected to them even when they are on the move. Indeed, PDA mobile phones are not just a great accomplishment but a sort of revolution in the cell phone segment.

With the growing consumerism in the modern society, consumers are getting increasingly brand-biased and they want own mobile phones that show their social standing. Especially the corporate world has been grossly responsible for creating this need in the market which has left the mobile phone manufactures vie with each others for offering the best cell phones to the customers in the market. Apart from the adorable designs of different handsets, features such as imaging abilities, music-enabled options, games and video recording capabilities have become common features of cell phones. Moreover, the style quotient is defined by introducing more and more features. For instance, brand-new phones fold open and slide-away cell phones that are slim are a rage among the youth around the world.

Mobile phone deals:

The mobile phone network service providers have come up with this great idea to offer their network services with the introduction of sleek and feature-filled cell phones. These offers are available in different package deals. The first one is known as pay-as-you-go (PAYG) where the users will have substantial control over how much they want to spend each month. The second one is called `contract mobile phone deals` where the buyers enter into a contract for a stipulated time period and hence, they do not have that much of control over their spending as they usually tend to overspend on their monthly phone bills. However, one of the reasons why a few people go for the `contract mobile phone deals` is that this service is generally offered with a free hand-set with many attractive features to tempt the impulsive buyers.

Which features do I need?

While buying a cell phone you need to decide on your immediate and day-to-day requirements. For instance, the business executives need PDA functionality enabled cell phones as they need this specific feature more than the normal users. On the other hand, average users, such as teenagers, look for multimedia and entertainment functions. So, get to know the main purpose of use for such a device, and look for the cell phone with just the needed features.

The New Face of Business Meetings

October 10, 2007

By Ajeet Khurana

We have been conducting meetings for ages now. Meetings took place in our personal lives, as well as during our day of work. Seminars, conventions, conferences, or simply, gatherings and discussions — various kinds of meetings offered people a chance to be heard.

In the days gone past, people would necessarily have a meeting ground that was set apart. But then, that was back in the days when people with similar needs and topics of discussion did not live too far away. Those who lived far away would most likely have different attitudes and a different set of priorities.

Now, let us fly off to the world of today. Times sure have changed. We are increasingly making contact with people who live not just in different towns and cities but in different time zones, and on different continents. We can no longer claim that people who live far from us share none of our interests. The various social networking websites that have proliferated imply a different truth. We share many interests with people of varied backgrounds who are situated many miles away from us.

On the business front also, people, in general, have much in common. Two employees of the same organization, who are stationed miles away from each other, will still have an interest in seeing their organization prosper.

Business people, from all nations have one goal in common — that of maximizing their profits and minimizing their expenses. In order to do this, objectives and targets awareness must be imparted to the staff. Sales pitches and presentations have to be made to clients. Given the way in which workforces and clients are scattered across the globe, getting everybody to gather at a single site may be a hassle. As a result, business organizations have to turn to modern business solutions.

One of the most popular solutions to the problem of conducting meetings in the world of today is the conference call. Conference calling allows people on one side of the globe to get in touch with those who are miles away.

The problem of transporting people from one place to another is eliminated as everyone can log on to the meeting without getting up from their work chair. Moreover, conference calling has changed a great deal recently. There was a time when only audio conferencing was a possibility. However, these days, more and more companies are availing of the video conferencing facility. The need to work fast overpowers all others. Hence, every company wants to squeeze the most value out of their working hours. Conference calling is a way to do the same.

New Orleans Printers Offer Tips on Paper Selection

October 10, 2007

By Andrew Stratton

When you are looking for cool but clear fonts, refreshing layouts and designs, and innovative design for your marketing campaign in New Orleans, printers with professional experience can offer you a multitude of unique and creative ideas, but it all begins with the quality of your paper stock.

Tips on Paper Selection

Choosing the right paper for a printing job seems like it would be a quick and easy choice. But when selecting paper type, your needs are different for each job, and there is tremendous variety available.

Learn a little about the different paper qualities to narrow down your choices. There are 10 qualities to look for that affect the price and its use for your project.

The first quality to consider is the surface of the paper stock. This is its look, feel and how well the printer can reproduce on it. Paper can be smoother absorb ink at different rates and depths.

Then, paper color is the most obvious quality. Different shades of the same color can be used for specialized uses. Paper for photos and graphics should be chosen to highlight accentuate contrast. Some paper reflects less glare. These should be used for in-depth reading, such as, instruction pamphlets or scientific writing.

Paper brightness is the amount of light that is reflected. Most papers reflect a large majority of light. Something for you to consider for your print job is high brightness tires the readers” eyes.

Paper opacity is how well other print can be seen through the paper. Very dense paper reduces the see-through and is better for more reading.

Grain is the direction of the ingredient fibers. For your concern, paper strength, flexibility, and versatility are all affected by grain direction.

Paper weight is based on the weight of one ream (five hundred sheets of the paper). When you go to the office supply store to buy paper for the copier, you buy wrapped reams. Paper is sold by the pound, so paper weight can directly effect your campaign’’s bottom line.

Related to weight, the caliper of paper means the paper’’s thickness. Caliper is measured in point size.

And this rounding out is bulk, which is the thickness relative to the weight.

The size of paper describes its physical cut. The most common, 8.5 x 11 paper is 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall. The wide variety of paper sizes available is another key aspect of keeping your costs in check.

Here\’s A Quick Way To Learn About GPS Navigation Systems

October 9, 2007

By Alex Olson

A GPS system is a global positioning system that is designed to give you the position of the unit, and of course, yourself anywhere in the world by using signals sent to and received from satellites. In this manner, the GPS unit can determine your exact location. There are a variety of uses also for a GPS system, many boats, cars, airplanes even people who hike or camp can and do carry a GPS system. Adding a GPS to a navigation system creates a more complete package and allows you to get directions and never have to worry about making a wrong turn.

There are a significant number of advantages when it comes to using GPS navigation system. One of these advantages is the ability to always know where you are. This is a valuable resource when it comes to heading out into areas you are not familiar with or if you are hiking, camping, or on a boat, getting back to an area you are familiar with.

The other advantage of using a GPS navigation system is the fact that in a car, it can, depending on the system you have speak the directions or show you where to go when it comes to making a turn. It can also tell you how long it will take to get there and allow you to make modifications to where you are going easily in cause of detours or the necessity of pulling off. On a boat it can tell you exactly where you are this comes in especially handy if for example, you are drifting due to an anchor coming loose or having been blown off course due to a storm.

There are a number of things to look for when picking out a GPS navigation system. The first thing to consider is what it is going to be used for. Is it going to be installed in a car, a boat or is it going to be used as a hand held device for use while camping or hiking. Once you have decided on an installed or hand held version you will need to look at the features offered by the GPS navigation system of your choice.

There are a variety of different features that comes with the range of GPS systems and usually the more features the more expensive so it’’s a good idea to know exactly what you are going to be using it for and what exactly you want before you go looking.

Finally, there is the consideration of price. Installed versions of the GPS system will cost more usually because they contain more features, more parts and do require installation while hand held units are usually the less expensive.

Conference Calling Goes Global

October 9, 2007

By Ajeet Khurana

The spread of globalization has wrought many changes in our lives. It has changed our ways of living. It has allowed us to avail of products and services that we would not have had access to. It has opened our minds to what the rest of the world can offer. At the same time, it has also altered the ways in which we work. Gone are the days when file cabinets and piles of paper dominated our offices. These days, a single computer can serve as the storehouse of all information. Any data that might be urgently required will only be a few mouse clicks away.

In a way, that shows how business has changed today. Convenience and speed have become necessities. Could that be a reason why many organizations are gradually choosing conference calls over the traditional business meetings? To begin with, business meetings usually result in some wastage of time. Even if the meeting starts on time, some amount of time will inevitably be squandered in going to the meeting. That time could easily have been used better. Moreover, a good deal of time goes into preparing the conference room, inviting and assisting the delegates, and generally making certain that the meeting runs like clockwork.

In addition to the waste of time, there are other kinds of wastage in using the traditional business meeting. Often enough, delegates have to be flown in from different places. This is more so these days, when the workforce is scattered across the world. Air fares and accommodation costs can have a negative impact on the company’’s budget.

Thus, more and more business organizations have begun to turn to conference calling to discuss various important issues. This is especially important when the matter to be discussed is one of crucial importance and which cannot wait for very long. The “con call” as it is popularly referred to, provides an extremely cost-effective way to carry out discussions on a given matter. Moreover, the organization concerned finds that it has to only pay for the conference call service, thus saving on larger costs like travel and hotel bills.

Also, conference calls need not be bounded by the domestic arena. International conference call services are easily available. Thus, one can simultaneously talk to someone from the same office building and someone based in a foreign country. These days, we have access to a variety of conference call service providers. On looking around, we will certainly find some great bargains.
