Look Inside To Discover How To Choose A Home Theater System

September 7, 2007

By Alex Olson

A home theater, to put it very simply, is arranging a variety of electronic components in order to make you feel that you are really watching a movie in a movie theater. Watching a movie on a home theater system is not at all like watching it on an ordinary television.

In order to build a home theater properly you will need to try to recreate the same type of elements that you would find in a movie theater. To have a good home theater system, you will have to have the following essentials (and this is a bare minimum):

1. You will need to have a television that measures at least 27 inches diagonally. You should also make sure that it delivers a clear picture.
2. You should have a minimum of four speakers.
3. You will need equipment that is able to split up the surround-sound signal and send it to the speakers.
4. You will need a component that is able to broadcast or play movies in surround sound and something that will give you a clear picture as well.

You will definitely needs a room in your house that will be suitable for arranging all of the home theater equipment.

There are many ways of meeting the above mentioned criteria. Basically, the kind of home theater you will have will depend largely on your budget. You must also rank in importance the different areas of performance and which means the most to you.

If you do not have all that much money to spend but it has been your dream to have a home theater system, then take another look at your television and your stereo system. Perhaps your TV is large enough that you would not have to consider getting a bigger television.

Your home entertainment system could be upgraded into a simple home theater system just by adding some extra speakers as well as some other rather inexpensive components. If your budget only allows for the basics, you just may get away with spending only about $500. This will probably get you a new DVD player as well as a basic surround-sound system.

Of course, if you are looking to have a more advanced home theater that has a much larger TV and a more advanced sound system, then you may be looking at spending about $8,000. If money is no object and you really want to have that true movie experience at home, then for about $30,000 you could set up your own theater inside of your home that is equipped with real theater seats, a projection TV and built-in speakers.

Here are also several reasons why you might want to consider a home theater system:

1. In your own home theater system, you can ask people to be quiet without any qualms of being beat up.
2. You can take off your shoes and feel comfortable when you are at home with your own home theater.
3. In your own home theater system you can rewind the movie if you did not get something the first time, did not understand something or if you just want to see the scene again.
4. You don”t have to put up with screaming children when you view something on your own home theater system.

These are just some of the benefits of having your own home theater system. You will find that in the long run, it will probably save you money as well as the inconvenience of having to go out all of the time to see a movie!

GPS Tracking Devices - Teens Vs Parents, Law Enforcement Vs Invasion Of Privacy

September 5, 2007

By Corbin Newlyn

GPS tracking devices have a multitude of uses, the majority of them are mostly beneficial. However, global positioning satellite system devices sometimes involve privacy issues that can, at times, lead to controversy.

Fleet Vehicles and GPS Tracking Devices

You”ll find that there are many companies both large and small that use global positioning tracking devices to follow the location of their vehicles. The majority of trucking companies have the capability to tell you where all of their vehicles are at any given point in time. In a similar manner, taxi companies as well as repair companies have the capability to monitor their trucks location so that they can dispatch them in a more efficient manner.

However, there are people that believe this gives the companies who choose to use GPS tracking devices more information than is needed about their drivers. For instance, trucking companies have the capability to know how much time a trucker has spent on the road, when and for what period of time he stops for sleep or meals and if he has taken any unscheduled side trips.

Dispatchers at these companies may be privy to personal information that is none of their business, such as a driver having lunch each day at the same place, and it is not his residence. Some individuals are of the opinion that this constitutes an invasion of personal privacy.

Teens and GPS Tracking Devices

There are some parents who use global positioning tracking devices to know the location of their teens. They may download global positioning system tracking software technology to the mobile phones of their teens, or they may place a global positioning system tracking device somewhere in their car. The teenagers may or may not be aware that their parents are monitoring them.

There is likely quite a few teens who believe that this is and invasion of their privacy.

GPS Tracking Devices and Surveillance

Does the thought run through your mind if your spouse having an affair? Curious to find out what your brother-in-law is up to? If you place a hidden GPS tracking device on their vehicle, you will at least know where they are going in their car. You may have to come to your own conclusions as to what they are actually doing there.

There are many people who would agree that this would be an invasion of privacy and quite a few would be offended if they either knew or suspected you were tracking them. Things get a little more involved when police use GPS tracking devices.

Global positioning tracking devices have been used by police to successfully solve crimes. An example of the conflict between serving justice and invasion of privacy; say the police put a GPS tracking device on the car of a person they suspect of being a murderer. They successfully track the the murderer as he unknowingly leads them to the victims grave. Is this an invasion of privacy? Should law enforcement officials be allowed to use global positioning tracking devices this way?

If, for instance, the police need to obtain a search warrant from a judge to use a GPS tracking device, should a private citizen be able to use this technology without a warrant? Should the average private citizen even be allowed to use global positioning tracking device technology at all? At times the right to privacy and the right to information are in conflict, this is one of those time.

All technology has moral and ethical implications that we as individuals and society as a whole has to grapple with. The right to privacy is the ethical dilemma we are forced to deal with when we use GPS tracking device technology.

Avoiding Digital Camera Shakes

September 5, 2007

By Roberto Sedycias

If ever you have seen a picture that is blurred, it is most probably because the camera was shaken while the picture was taken. With traditional photographic film cameras, it was evident only after the negatives and positives were made. However, with digital camera, the captured image can be seen immediately on the LCD screen, and if the image has shaken, then it can be discarded for a new shot.

Digital camera shakes are common with new users. This is primarily because, new users have not fully understood that the shutter-release button must not be pressed twice, but pressed two steps down. The first step locks the focus and exposure while the second step takes the photo. This pressing of the button has to be smooth, otherwise the digital camera shakes and a blurred picture is the result.

The shutter speed also plays an important role in blurring the picture. The shutter speed is the amount of time the shutter remains open to allow light to reach the digital camera sensor. It is measured in seconds or fractions of a second. An image is exposed by the combination of the lens aperture and the shutter speed. A slow shutter speed needs a small aperture (large F-stop number) to avoid over exposure. With a slow shutter speed below 1/60th of a second, over exposure is adequately controlled, but the digital camera is likely to vibrate more, giving a shaky picture.

A tripod is extremely useful to eliminate digital camera shakes. It is generally used by sports photographers who use long telephoto lens, as it helps in close-ups, landscape and panning shots, for timed exposures, for shooting at slow shutter speeds, and for taking photographs in low or dim light conditions. Shooting a fast moving subject, like athletes, or wildlife, tests the photographer`s skill and the equipment. In such cases, camera shakes are most likely to happen, and thus a monopod or a tripod is always used. Digital cameras mounted on tripods always tend to eliminate camera shakes and give sharp results.

A great feature in most high-end digital cameras available nowadays is image stabilization (IS). IS is an anti-shake and vibration reduction technology and is common in digital cameras with long telephoto zooms of 10X and 12X. With IS, sharp images can be obtained even if the camera shakes a little, a slow shutter speed is used, shooting is done in low light conditions, or a tripod is not used. IS was originally developed for video cameras. It is now available in interchangeable lens, consumer and professional digital cameras, which use optical image stabilization. Sports and wildlife photographers use a tripod and IS technology together to get the maximum sharpness of their photographs; however, many other photographers turn the IS feature off while using a tripod.

Digital camera shakes can be eliminated or minimized by the utilization of the above techniques. However, the fundamentals of taking a good shot prove to be most effective in avoiding camera shakes, in the absence of tripods, or IS technology.

The basics of good photography should be followed. You should hold the digital camera with both your hands. You should keep the legs apart with the knees slightly bent forward. Your elbows should be braced with your body and your body braced with some support, if possible. You should generally frame and compose the picture with the viewfinder and not the LCD screen. You should not jab but lightly press the shutter release button two steps down, and during that time, it would be beneficial to hold your breath to prevent any movement of the chest and hands. With this basic technique of good photography, you can be sure that your digital camera will not shake and no picture will be blurred.

Two Way Pagers Vs. Cell Phones

September 4, 2007

By Anna Woodward

Some people will tell you that two way pagers are better and more convenient than cell phones. This may seem hard to believe, especially if you haven”t owned a pager in a while. But, the truth is that the latest models offer great features at a reasonable price, and this is what’’s making them competitive with cell phones.

The Old Days

To understand how far along these tools have come, let’’s go back to the dark ages … a couple of years ago!

Beepers, as we used to call them, could only receive messages. That means that pager would display someone calling you, but you couldn”t use it to call anybody.

They also displayed only numbers. This meant that your beeper would go off, and it would give you a series of numbers with no name or anything. Then, you had to go to a phone and call back the person, who you may not even be sure of.

That Was Then, This Is Now

Now, we have two way pagers and alpha-numeric pagers. “Two way” means that you can send messages as well as receive them. Alpha-numeric means that you can use text as well as numbers.

Different styles have different text features. For example, they usually only allow you to send short messages, although there are modles out there that have expanded character length.

Different models have different ways of inputting text. Most have a tiny QWERTY keyboard that you can use with a couple of fingers to enter text. Some of the best models that have come out in the last few years have been those that flip open like a modern cell. This way, they can be kept compact.

The best state-of-the-art text messaging models have Internet capabilities. This means that you are effectively carrying a tiny computer around in your pocket. The features are usually a little limited, but you can still get news reports, e-mail, and surf some regular websites.

The Price Is Right

One reason why these are now competitive with mobile telephones is the price. Even the fanciest versions are still cheaper than most cell phones. Options like nationwide paging, which allow you to get and send messages virtually anywhere, are often better deals than mobile network roaming rates. Pagers usually have better range and reception, as well.

In many situations, pagers are more convenient to use. For example, those who use a cell phone for their business might find that a pager works just as well without the extra features they don”t need. They can also knock a few bucks off the price. With the cost lower than cell phones, a small business owner can afford to equip all their employees with these communication tools.

Better Reception

The claims that the reception is better than that of cellular service is true. This is because pagers operate on a regular, simple radio frequency. They do not have as much information to transmit. On the other hand, mobile phones need to be used where there are towers to pick up the signal.

We”ve all had problems with our cellular reception. It seems like no matter how they improve technology, your conversations still turn into Swiss cheese when you go under a bridge. Pagers don”t have this problem.

It’’s more important than ever to be reachable no matter where you are. Before you head out and buy a cell phone, you should check out what the paging industry has to offer. Text messaging pagers can save you money and trouble.

Closed Circuit Television

September 3, 2007

By Anna Woodward

They are everywhere, in banks, casinos, airports, train stations and even shopping malls. Closed Circuit Televisions are an effective means of surveillance that have become a necessity for both security and evidence.

Closed Circuit Television, otherwise known as CCTV refers to the usage of video surveillance cameras to monitor public and private areas. Surveillance cameras send a signal to a restricted number of monitors where security personnel can keep track of them.

In comparison with broadcast TVs, Closed Circuit Television systems are not directly sent out. However, CCTV does make use of point to point wireless links.

Ever since the first appearance of CCTV back in 1942, when it was used to observe the launch of rockets, Closed Circuit Television systems have come a long way and become more and more widespread. They were also used and developed after the IRA bombings as a silent reaction to these aggressive acts.

Currently, CCTV is part of the security systems of banks, public spaces and is also becoming increasingly popular among home owners looking to protect their assets. However, the presence of Closed Circuit Television has given way to a controversial debate, mainly as it relates to privacy issues.

CCTV offers a truthful broadcast of what is happening in a public space, rendering footage that might prevent crime or identify illegal activities or criminals. For example, in a bank, CCTV images can monitor the presence of a break-in during the night and the police can be notified allowing the robbery to be prevented. On the other hand, if the theft has already taken place, the images can unveil the identity of a suspect.

At airports or train and tube stations, these surveillance cameras can also be of great help. The images from CCTV cameras have helped in finding the persons who planned the bombings in London 2005, and have also been central to solving many other crimes.

Closed Circuit Televisions are also being used to monitor traffic on highways and motorways. The CCTVs can point out the places where there is a traffic jam or an accident, allowing measures to be taken within minutes.

The latest trend for CCTV usage is on private properties and housing areas. The aim of the Closed Circuit Televisions is that of social control. People are becoming more and more concerned in keeping their property safe and so they choose CCTVs to help do it.

CCTVs have proven to be a great help in crime prevention and detection and are being successfully used in many circumstances and places. Conversely, Closed Circuit Televisions being in many public places is a threatening fact to people’’s privacy. Just imagine that everywhere you go, there’’s a big chance that a CCTV system has been installed there. For many this feels like they are being watched at almost all times; that’’s not a pleasant thought. However, the thought that Closed Circuit Televisions can bring more safety can act as a comfort that undoubtedly outweighs any negatives.

Avoid These Mistakes With Your LED Cross

September 3, 2007

By Fabio Aversa

Yesterday I was in Siena (Tuscany) with my girlfriend, enjoying the wonderful landscapes of the Tuscanian hills and the marvellous architecture of this incredible medieval town, when I suddenly saw a wonderful LED cross!

It happen quite often to see one of LED crosses installed around Italy but yesterday I was particularly happy as the I loved the city, so I probably was more receptive to it.

When I got closer to the LED cross though (60 x 60 cm, alphanumerical, green and blue), my happiness was replaced by a little disappointment and frustration. Was the LED cross not incredibly bright? Was is not perfectly installed? Was it in a bad location? No, not at all. The equipment itself and the installation were absolutely perfect.

My frustration was generated by the usage to the LED cross: in fact the pharmacy owner was using the variable message sign (embedded within the LED cross) to broadcast 3 basic information: time, date and temperature.

Time, date and temperature? That’’s it? This type of product could memorize up to 99 pre-edited messages and you could almost write an entire book in each single message! Why on earth you should not use this amazing potential?! With 99 pre-edited message you can edit today the message that you will broadcast for Christmas, or Easter, or for the Summer and then just make it visible when needed!

Why the owner wasn”t advertising the anti-allergic drugs so popular right now, at the beginning of Spring? Why he/she wasn”t promoting the prices and discounts offered in the pharmacy? How come he/she was not advertising the fact that the pharmacy is in a tax-free area? And most of all, why wasn”t she showing all these information in Italian, English, German, Spanish and all other languages they used on the hand-written poster hanging from their door? Maybe they didn”t want to inform other potential customers that were 100 meters distance?!

It drives me crazy! Some people still think that the advantage of LED crosses (and variable message signs in general) is the fact that they are brighter and they consume less energy then neon signs. Wake up people, this is one of the advantages! Only one. And not even the most important probably!

The biggest advantage of your variable message sign is that it is a sign with variable message! You can modify the text, change the color, increase/decrease the speed, enlarge the characters height, and make it scroll in vertical or horizontal, from left or right, select among tens of font sets. And so much more! Why don”t take advantage of such a flexible communication and advertising tool?

Destination: Saturn

September 2, 2007

By Andrew Impey

Alight to the sixth planet from the sun, a haloed, vaporous tumult of a world that promises to exhilarate your senses and reveal celestial secrets from the Milky Way’’s distant past.

Overview
Saturn has for centuries been a numinous enigma in the night sky; from its historic, mythological perception as the ominous, evil-eyed figure who could scald onlookers with one swift gaze to its modern-day intrigue surrounding its many dozens of glimmering satellites and dynamically charged magnetosphere.

“An arduous, seven year journey that will likely exercise your patience and endurance.”
Deferring only to Jupiter in size, Saturn is the second largest planet in our solar system - with a volume 755 times more massive than the Earth - and bears a similarly Jovian composition of gaseous hydrogen and helium. Volatile at its core and emanating enormous heat, the gas giant’’s nebulous surface appears at once luminous and wind-streaked. Meanwhile, its body, swathed in rings of crushed rock and ice, pirouettes with spellbinding velocity, dizzying around its axis in just under 11 hours.

Getting There
Traveling to Saturn will be an unforgettable part of your holiday adventure, and is in no way expeditious. Located past the Asteroid Belt, and ensconced in solar orbit between Jupiter and Uranus, Saturn is a mind-bending 792,948,880 miles from Earth, making for an arduous, seven-year journey that will likely exercise your patience and endurance. (Insider’’s tip: A bevy of books and music will prove critical to your sanity and, thusly, will be duly appreciated by your fellow spacecraft mates.)

Once your shuttle arrives in Saturn’’s gravitational grasp, you will need to transfer to a smaller vessel (maximum capacity: two persons) specially designed to withstand the planet’’s harsh outer atmosphere. There is no turning back at this point, and rest assured, your fancy camera, if not your fledgling soul, will thank you for it.

(Caution! Do take heed of storm alerts. The Dragon Storm espied in 2004 was extraordinarily persistent and dangerous, with unpredictable, fatal plumes and flare-ups.)

What to Expect
Although Saturn generates more energy than it gleans from the sun, its outlying distance from the stellar mass amounts to an average temperature of -288 degrees fahrenheit (-178 Degrees Centigrade), three times colder than the most frigid temperature noted in Antarctica. Add to that easterly equatorial winds approximating 1,100 mph (500 meters/second), and the climate well surpasses traditional notions of inhabitable environments - sounding downright inhumane. However, offsetting this cacophonous turbulence is Saturn’’s surprisingly ethereal form: it boasts the remarkable distinction of being the only planet in our solar system that is less dense than water. So while the climate is undoubtedly severe, the payoff will leave you literally floating - and swirling - in the clouds.

Sightseeing
Your Saturnian voyage may seem a futuristic sci-fi tale of the deep-space variety, but its superficial mystique belies a deeper story - one that may date as far back as the origins of the solar system itself. Behold your surroundings, rife with hydrogen and helium, and embodying slight traces of water, methane, and ammonia; and experience the primordial conditions of our solar system.

Meanwhile, Saturn’’s largest-known moon, Titan, just one of many in the planet’’s complex lunar circuitry, commands a thick, burgeoning atmosphere suggestive of Earth’’s newborn years.

Lastly, no visit would be complete without a proper flyby through the gaps and spokes of Saturn’’s radiant rings. Navigate your way in and around the A Ring to the Encke Gap and Cassini Division for your best and safest bet, obtaining a close-up view of the formative ring elements: dust-encrusted rock and ice. Godspeed!
